When I did it for the first time I was confuse, i saw starboard and I know what is that. At first I thought the skill only have one name until later on I notice another one is called larboard, my first thought was wth is larboard, isn't it port? I agree that the English name for the attack is confusing cause well not anyone know nautical terms, and the use of larboard which I doubt even less people know what is that.

I did 5 years active duty in the Navy. Even the Navy uses Port and Starboard. The temple of the first dungeon has a boss that uses Port/Stbd.

This is unacceptable bias towards making the mechanic easier for JP players if they literally just have right/left.

As already mentioned in the thread, the Japanese attack names are 左舷 port and 右舷 starboard. Since the words for left and right 左/右 are baked into those terms it is a lot easer to recognize that in japanese even if you have no nautical experience. I am no native english speaker, but I always assumed it was port and not larboard. I didn't even find larboard in my japanese dictionary to be honest.

The worst part is how close starboard and larboard are. If they at least used PORT it'd be easier. Or we could just be like the Japanese players and get: Leftboard and Rightboard.

Do you remember the debuffs in A6 and A8 where we needed to stand on the lower or upper tiles or we would take damage? The icons are very clear, an explosion on either the lower step or the higher one(plus a different color scheme).
In the English version, these debuffs are called lower/upper arithmetics which sounds reasonable. In the other three, it's arithmetics I/II...
I can tell you that some people were really loud about "how the debuff name tells you exactly where not to stand!". So it was biased towards people playing in English, right?

In the end, sometimes one translation of the game will make a mechanic easier and sometimes it won't...

Those debuffs were color coded, red debuff on red panel.

    I highly doubt that.

I'm not sure where I picked up the meaning but I knew what larboard meant. I was so amazed to see the term after all this time I died to the mechanic anyway.

Just call it "Port" SE. Give the guy who dug up the term a cookie or something to make him feel good and then change it to the sensible term that most people have a chance at recognizing.

As someone who got their boating license earlier this year, this part really screwed me up than it should have. I knew what starboard meant right away, but all I saw in larboard was "-board", and since the telegraph for it is rather punishing, I just go right out of instinct. Wouldn't mind honestly if they gave us 1 or 2 more secs to actually think.

    What's the problem anyways? D:

"Star" is right, "Lar" is left. It might make you wipe once, but it's easy to remember!

The word larboard really did throw us off yesterday when we were doing it but none of us knew which side starboard was either XD The thing is, we saw starboard and obviously thought there would be a port at some point but I guess not lol
But once you learn it, it's the same as it literally saying left and right, so I imagine that a few more rounds in that fight and most of us will be doing that mechanic alright.

The thing to remember is that Larboard has an L so it's left ^.^ (I literally do the same in Tsukuyomi, where I always say 'Bright, go right' cus it rhymes XD)
