    An Unexpected Error has occurred. Exiting Final Fantasy XIV.(17)

    Hello there,

    recently made a switch to Final Fantasy 14 from PS4 to PC and encountered an error that doesn't allow me to log back in.


    Earlier today I teleported to Kugane, as part of the Main Story, and the game crashed, giving me the "An Unexpected Error has occurred..." message prompt.

    I tried logging in several times, receiving the same error and to no avail. I am able to visit other City-States on my other characters on different servers/worlds. However I cannot log in my character who may be stuck loading into Kugane.

    I have currently tried:
    Changing to DirectX 9, from DirectX 11.
    Run as Admin
    Updated to the latest graphics drivers.
    Switching display settings, graphics quality, etc.,
    No other programs are running apart from Final Fantasy, and no overlays like Windows Game Mode, or even Discord.

    Attempting a fresh reinstall, but my options are looking dim.

    What do I do?

    I have a similar problem, except that mine says An Unexpected error has occurred. Exiting Final Fantasy XIV.(2) It hasn't been this way until about patch 4.36 and it's getting frustrating. It won't let me start the game unless it crashed at least twice and it randomly crashes during loading screens.

    That's definitely no fun.

    I haven't played since patch 4.1 really, and bought the Windows edition recently to experience the game a bit differently. It's frustrating having made the purchase just to encounter this error, lol. I've had some FC mates try to troubleshoot the issue with me, but to no avail.

    Good afternoon and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

    When you reinstall the game, make sure to delete the files in the 'My Documents' folder (My Documents > My Games > Final Fantasy XIV). These don't get deleted in the reinstall and may be contributing to the error.

    Let us know if you still have the error after that.

    So we have to uninstall and reinstall the game, making sure to delete the files in that folder before we reinstall?

    I suggested that because Azaechen was already attempting a reinstall and had tried a list of things already. You may want to try switching to DirectX 9 mode and updating your graphics card drivers first.

    Update --

    I did a clean reinstall of the game, and everything seems to be working fine thus far. Took a bit of time due to my internet being a bit slow, so wasn't the preferred method to fix, but nonetheless I am not seeing that error at this time.
