It's really not that big of a stretch.
Let me dispell a misconception here: you're thinking of Omega Weapon. Omega Weapon is typically the bigger, badder version of Ultima Weapon. And, as of yet, Omega Weapon has yet to appear in XIV.

Omega, on the other hand, is just a really powerful robot from Final Fantasy V that has since become a recurring bonus boss.

Meh, potato potahto. Omega Weapon is at least very strongly inspired by Omega, and they both take the form of superbosses in any games they appear in. Close enough.

Walked into O12N with another tank and a healer from the <Dance>. We only wiped once (group we were with failed the Middy DPS check), but otherwise cleared the decks. The fights are great!

I had a lot of fun with it and the story was great.

I also find it funny that VII fans got their homage, just not how they were expecting. Omega-M carries something that looks suspiciously like a katana. Though the skinniness and hair hearken back to the Emperor in II. So he's kind of a Sephiroth / Mateus mix.

People are trying way too hard, either as a joke or actually serious, to connect Sephiroth to Omega-M.

Come back to me when the katana it carries is longer then if it was using a greatsword AND actually has long hair. Nael has longer hair than Omega-M does and she doesn't even use a sword yet she's closer to being a Seph expy.

What's wrong with an homage to Sephiroth? The pattern was V and then VI. It was reasonable that the third might include VII somewhere. I see it as a little poking fun by SE like "See? We did include VII". And I could see a reference to II to go along with the reference to I. Though I kinda wish we had gotten to fight a simulation of Mateus somewhere in there.

Its less about anything being wrong with an homage to Sephiroth, and more that it again seems to be trying to apply it to Omega-M when beyond being a "pretty boy with a sword" it isn't really there.

I don't think the homage would be anything more than that. And like I said, I think that's just SE poking a bit of fun at the people who wanted VII. Just giving them a little friendly guff.

More than the battles (which were very good anyway), what I truly LOVED about Omega was the story. I don't tend to care about the plot behind raids; I've tried reading some in the past, but I eventually started skipping the cutscenes because I saw no interest in them. Omega has been a whole different matter and I'm glad I didn't skip it. Some scenes have made me cry more than the main quest ever did.

I finished it yesterday and now I feel a bit empty that it's over. I miss Alpha and Cid (and even Nero) already! Right in the feels, SE.

Its the guy from the ffxiv cover art, no homage or anything.
(This was pointed out by someone else in a different thread)
Just google ffxiv collector edition. The only thing new is the F version.
