From the sound of it, you'll only be able to access an Inn from the city you started in, as the requirements to get them are main scenario quests, and you can only do the one you started in.

As far as it being attached to the market ward, I am 100% positive it won't be. Each Adventurer's Guild already has an Inn attached to it, which currently has an NPC that does nothing. We'll more than likely have to talk to him to get to our room.

From what I gather they'll most likely be at the Adventurer's Guild in each city-state.

Ul'dah: The Quicksand hosts an inn near the retainer bell called "The Hourglass".
Limsa Lominsa: The Drunken Wench has an inn labeled "The Mizzenmast".
Gridania: At the Carline Canopy you can find an inn they call "The Roost".

So it's my guess the quest will either start with that city-nation's proprietor (Ul'dah's Momodi, Limsa Lominsa's Baderon, or Gridania's Miounne) or the innkeeper found at each desk in the Adventurer's Guild. In fact the Adventurer's Guild linkpearl you obtain earlier on might even be used to start the quest. The proprietor who gave it to you will contact you about getting a room of your own and send you off on some task to fulfill and obtain your own room. But the question still remains if you'll be allowed to get a room in each city, if there will be quests for each city or just one single universal one to unlock a room at each inn.

That would give these inns a purpose which seems to be the exact opposite of what they want...

I'd expect once we have actual housing we'll be able to store stuff in them.

I'm not grateful when I eat a good steak because I paid for it in the first place.

However when you go to a restaurant for a steak, you ask for the steak and pay for it. In the case of FFXIV you're paying a fee to access the game, not to be entitled to whatever features you see fit. I swear this is one of the many reasons I hate this community so much.

This is true. Player housing really wasn't something that is a requirement but an added feature. That and right now they're working on bigger things at this time. At least giving us this much right now is something to be grateful for, but doesn't mean we can't expect something bigger. It will just come in due time is all.

EDIT: I'm hoping someone from the team might read this and give us a few more bits of insight on the housing like what we should expect, and if others can visit us. The big deal for me is if I can invite others over to visit my room. I guess from an RP perspective, having a room at one of the inns is a big thing I've been waiting to get for a very long time. But not being able to invite a couple people over kind of dampens the whole feel. Either way, I'm still happy to have at least this for now. I gotta go to sleep so I'll check back up on this topic after I get home from work tonight.

Don't get me wrong, I was mostly being sarcastic. I'm happy we're getting SOMETHING out of the rooms but at the same time the whole "ungrateful" schtick is getting old. We're all allowed to criticize within reason.

In Gridania, a moogle will come sneak into your room during the middle of the night and take your pants. In Ul'dah you'll awaken with a bottle of beer in one hand, and a girl from the Mineral Concern in the other. And in Limsa Lominsa, you'll find a Roegadyn curled up at the foot of your bed and you'll be praying to the Twelve that you didn't do what you think you did last night.

All seriousness I do wonder what that means as well, could it be like special events you log in to find? In FFXI when you collected a Christmas tree you'd have a present that would appear under it and find out via your moogle. Could be something similar this year, as the Starlight Festival rolls around you'll mysteriously find a gift within your room one day upon logging in.

Too easy to get away with AFK bot crafting if you were allowed to craft in your private housing.
