Only because you seem to be set on insisting it has to be one or another, while pretty much everyone who responded to you stated that it is both. Can the system be improved? Sure. But that still doesn't change the fact that the OP in this case take the lion share of the responsibility over losing his own house. The reasons why had been given to you over many times by other posters in this thread so no need for me to repeat it. I only make this point to point out you shouldn't be so binary in your thought.

That's because I feel that pointing out their mistake while they are sharing their frustration is like kicking them while they are down. I'm not entirely sure who benefits from that, and frankly the way it's delivered just feels off to me.

Maybe it's because we have different standard, but I don't think frustration is a valid reason to absolve oneself from personal responsibility. If something bad happens to someone through no fault of theirs, and they come cry on my shoulder I would have no problem offering my sympathy. But if someone use their frustration to shift the blame to others, I would more than likely give it to them straight in the fact that the should reflect on their own short coming.
