1. look up animals to kill in hunting log
2. go to correct area
3. can kill them but no credit in my log. animals do not have a symbol above them to be killed.

Depending on what you're killing, it may be the wrong group.
Some sets of mobs have multiple groups using the same name, but still count as different mobs so to speak. The log needs you to get the specific level ones as well.
Perhaps include what you're trying to kill to help the report?
