I had severe packet loss around Texas when it was at the old location. Now sure my connection is smoother now that it is on the west coast but my route still goes through bad nodes of NTT during primetime and my latency shoots up to 230ms+ and packet loss the moment it touches NTT's side.

I seem to get the short end of the stick regardless where the servers are. Not all nodes are bad but I always get sent through the bad ones.

Also having a ping of 100 isn't unplayable since my ping at the old location was 170ms.

Depending on where you're located the network backbone from southeast to northeast of the US is actually shorter than east to west, so that's why most people not living in the west coast had a decent ping to Montreal, barring level 3 shenanigans.

My game connection is great 95% of the time. The 5% when it's not is because I'm downloading something, or someone is watching 4k Netflix in my living room.
Are you pinging the correct IP address? That seems way too low compared to the average from the east coast.

I completely agree that San Jose has sh*& for routing. It's such a lag fest every single night.

I started playing FFXIV about July 2017. Have been loving it since then. Never had any kind of connection problems. Then one day, the servers were moved to San Jose, CA. Ever since then, every night, around 8 PM Central Time, my ping goes sky high. If I click a mineral deposit to gather, it's roughly a good 10 to 30 seconds before it hits. If I'm in a dungeon, I'll see people and then a few seconds later, they go running by. I've had an entire area stop moving for a full two minutes only to "replay in fast forward speed" in increments until I eventually get a disconnect.

Sometimes I can just power through it and live with it. Usually the lag lasts for about 45 to 60 minutes then it stabilizes out. Every now and then, it's so bad, I just log out and go play something else.

    I'm in the mid-west (TN/KY/IL area)
    Central Time Zone
    Comcast for internet

If SE could ever create a data center connection for the mid-west and another for the east-coast, that would be awesome.

This is the only game I have consistent, reliable lag on.

If you started playing in July 2017, the servers were already in CA. They moved with the expansion launch in June or just before in May.

July was just a guesstimate. I started playing in HW and got stormblood after the launch. Back when I had to do conj up to 30 then arc up to 15?

    That's my dream.

And at Brazil there are pretty good datacenters. So good that Microsoft keeps all Azure servers at Sao Paulo. And that datacenter alone is enough to keep Azure services for the entire south America.

And it works for games? Yes, it works. Brazil have even a WoW server, with a full-translated content to portuguese. And the first server was opened 6 years ago.

    Well... Everyone can dream...

Maybe they should just go with another server provider other than NTT. Every time I run a tracert it shows hop right before last one that is malboro server one it always requests time outs and ping to it jumps way higher than the rest or them and also belongs to NTT that hop.

Its not even fully the ISP, but certain switches/routers in the route. Its not the networking gear at the datacenter, or it would be effecting everyone.
Well I'm not saying it's the server itself, but everything possible thing related to the functioning of the data center from equipment to service provider to route, etc. FFXIV is literally unplayable as of now. I don't know what's causing the problem and don't think it's the isp in my area. I can do everything else smoothly like streaming and play other steam online games perfectly fine, but FFXIV just wouldn't run smoothly. It started 2 to 3 weeks ago, the game turned into a rubber-banding power point slide show all of a sudden. I'm not IT person, but this is extremely annoying.

The most frustrating thing is I had zero issue with connection before the relocation. Now post relocation, I suddenly have connectivity issues when I'm in West Coast is absurd.

What they need to do is put this in a central location for the servers where no area is being affected.
So the answer is more servers, I suppose.

I wonder how it is for EU players? I have yet to hear about EU players having an issue due to proximity to servers. But this could be partially due to how internet speeds tend to be far better there than in and around NA : /

Don't know how much my thoughts count being an Aussie playing on USA servers but it's been tons better for me ever since they moved. Before the move, things would still play pretty well, except every now and then there'd be unpredictable lag spike's and periods of time where I'd get disconnected and wouldn't be able to reconnect for 15 minutes. Never had any serious problems like that these days.
