Been playing solo for almost 60 days now...

It's to the point where I don't even read the MSQ and I skip any cutscene if it's not directly involving something pretty looking like a cityscape or battle. Can someone help me out with tips on how to get over this hump of trash storyline in Stormblood? Am I the only person who is not at all interested in how some far away land that has nothing to do with where I'm from is being attacked by an empire no longer attacking me.... for a whole expansion........ idk it doesn't help that I'm a white mage. stoning shit to death has got to be a special form of hell.

    vent over i guess,

help me i'm logging in lol

Although you could say that of Doma, I think the storyline does a decent (not AWESOME but decent) method of connecting to why you should care. Ala Mhigo shares a border with Gridania--very much a looming threat. But to get to Ala Mhigo, you have to save Doma so the empire panics. It's diversion tactics, and that's kinda what it's about. The empire isn't attacking you now, but they are always poised to if they keep Ala Mhigo.

As for the telling, it's not horrible. I mean not everyone likes it, but it is what it is lol Azim Steppe is the best part of the expac tbh.

The main problem with the storyline is that they split it into 2 and neither one of them are better for it. They both had potential to be great stories but should have each been their own expansion. I honestly enjoyed the Ala Mhigo section much more than the Doma. I also feel cheated out of zones we are not going to get at all and zone expansions its safe to say are just not going to happen (looking at all those wasted zone lines in ARR zones).

I really don't know why they added Doma in this expac, it really should have been 5.0 with Garlemald in 6.0 although I am pretty happy that we will be seeing an end to the reign of Garlemald in 5.0 and hopefully the Ascians too, or soon after. These antagonists have been around since 2010, time to put this baby to bed and give us something different.

Also, if you are not doing so already, use your chocobo companion. Will make things go much faster if you're on healer, esp if its already at the rank 20 cap

Because sometimes it's content (like which jobs they want to add) that comes first, and the story has to be designed to work that in somehow. SE was in a hurry to bring out the next two most popular jobs, so we got Doma to justify getting samurai.

We'll call this light spoilers - read at your own peril.

At no point did i ever actually care about Ala Mhigo. When i first met the Ala Mhigan refugees they came off to me as unsympathetic. Their old were defeated, their young were the enemy(trying to summon a primal to their cause - have they not noticed that this basically never works?). What bits of lore i picked up made it sound like they didnt even fight to save their own land from invasion, and instead wanted everyone else to fight for them. We recruited several of them to join our Crystal Braves initiative, and given time they could have won us over and moved us into taking a more proactive position on the Ala Mhigan issue. Instead they betrayed us and set us up. When the Griffin eventually made his big play at the Wall i wasnt moved to see his side - i was upset with him over the level of losses he was willing to accept and the collateral damage from his brash move. So we go into enemy territory. The locals are antagonistic against the resistance. The resistance itself seems fairly hopeless. And sure enough, as soon as they put forth even a token amount of effort(with our help) Zenos shows up and sorts them out. The only reason he doesnt wipe them out is that he's too bored. We leave, and by the time we come back... almost nothing has changed. At this point Zenos is curious if we can get strong enough to give him a real fight, so he has little incentive to really stop us. Instead he puts seemingly everything on his 2nd - whether this is so he can prepare or because he thinks she will ultimately fail im not sure. All along the way the locals are still fairly unsympathetic and the land itself didnt even seem worth liberating. Now Fordola? Her i liked. Her story was fairly cliche, but she fought like a rabid dog to prove herself and keep her position. After failure she didnt blame others, she sought to do whatever she could to improve her lot.

Compare to Doma. When we meet the refugees they are boat people. Theyve been at sea for months trying to find a safe port. There was an attempted uprising, and the empire didnt just put it down but they put it down with authority. They had to flee if they wanted to live. They call upon us for help, and we find them a barren inhospitable place to stay(they get approx the same level of help as the ala mhigans did back in the day). Do they complain? Maybe a little, but by and large they are grateful to have someplace rather then continuing to travel the seas. They have a bit of trouble adjusting, but they make due. One of their leaders even more or less joins the Scions to help us with our troubles because of the help we provided them. So after the rumble at Rhalgrs we get the idea to open a second front and head toward Doma to see what the prospects are. The locals still have a fire in them, but their overlord is twisted and sadistic so they arent super on-board with us stirring up trouble(i also liked yotsuyu). We meet Hien and he's the type of leader they wish they had back in ala mhigo. Hes smart(he has an actual plan!), hes tough, but hes willing to respect his peoples wishes if they dont want him to cause trouble(bonus points for his theme - love me some FF6). The plan was a bit of a longshot, but we pull it off being the warrior of light(because duh). More bonus points for showing up to help us in the battle of ala mhigo(a fight that had nothing to do with him). And i liked his presence during the Asahi story of the last couple patches(which did tie a nice little bow on a couple issues). Also in contrast, the land we free isnt just some barren wasteland - it seems worth fighting for - and not just for strategic purposes.

tl;dr - I thought ala mhigo was the bad part of this expansion. You can force me to fight somewhere but you cant force me to care.

In darkness, in cold, in the midst of winter where nothing walks the world but death and fear let the brave rejoice: I call the light.
Out of darkness, light. Ouf of silence, song. Ouf of the sun´s death, the birth of each year. Out of cold, fire. Out of death, life. Out of fear, courage to see the day. (Elizabeth Moon - The Deed of Paksenarrion)

Well, some friends of yours (the refugees that moved into Mor Dhona) are domans and Yugiri who helps you out of some big pickles is a doman... so what, you have no loyalty to the people who helped you?

@Frizze: One thing I would have to say, is that regardless of what one might or might not think about Ala Mihgo... one thing I cannot deny is how purely awesome that cutscene in the prison with Fordola is, when she makes the mistake of looking into the WoL's memories. lol.

    That shut her up fast.

Yeah same here. I think it may just be that White Mage is just incredibly boring. I'm considering switching up classes altogether even though I'll have to level back up to 56 cause White Mage is just that boring.

Like i said, i liked Fordola(cliches and all). Family in a position to benefit more from the occupation then most. Tragedy ensues that makes both sides out to be the bad guy. Joins the army to take her proper place and maybe get a little revenge. Rises through the ranks even though she isnt a garlean(dealing with prejudice and questions all along the way). Attacks ruthlessly regardless of the target(the castrum attack?). Undergoes experimental procedure with unintended consequences. Defeated and captured by the "hero" of the story. "Why do you do it?" Her story probly has 1 or 2 more chapters in it, and im curious if theyll do something bold or stay(fairly) predictable. We'll start to find out soon enough.

I agree with you overall that I didn't like the Ala Mhigan part of Stormblood (though I wasn't all that keen on the Doman side either), but I think you're misremembering this bit. The only Ala Mhigan we recruited to the Braves was Wilred, one of the few 'good' Braves, who was himself betrayed by the others.

And I don't think we were ever supposed to sympathise with the Griffin. The overall plight of Ala Mhigo, yes, but not him.
