FWIW, it's not servers, it's the netcode and data storage structure and methodology. That's why it's such a "mountain" at this point - so many things are built on top of the shaky foundation that it's the highest of high risk jobs to change now. It's basically "tech debt."

WoW had a similar issue with its inventory and glamour system that took nearly 12 years to entirely fix, so it's not actually that uncommon a problem. Of course it's incredibly frustrating and nobody likes to hear about the reasons a company you're paying can't accomplish something. (If anything, the problem is that the staff here have been more open than many about the technical limitations they face to the point where it just frustrates people since it sounds like "excuses" -- even if makes sense to the few software developers in the audience.)
