WoW's latest expansion, while bland gameplay-wise and lacking the "grey morality" so many people assumed it would have, is narrative-wise very compelling precisely because of the history behind the majority of the cast. That wouldn't be possible if a big chunk of the characters were killed off every couple expansions. There are major character deaths, but they are done only occasionally, and they have meaning (Varian's death in the prologue of Legion is one of the greatest Heroic Sacrifices I've ever seen).

I don't agree a lot of characters need to be killed off to illustrate what the stakes are. One or two, done well, should suffice.

That said, I'm still not sure how much we're going to be fighting the Empire in 5.0 - what we saw in the Shadowbringers teaser suggests our primary enemies will be agents of the Light, for whatever reason, so while it was the most logical conclusion before I'm not sure the Empire is going to be our center-stage antagonists past 4.5(5).
Geh. I am going to disagree with you in a lot of ways about WoW's latest expansion. It has totally destroyed the horde's old identity and much of the horde's narrative has characters acting out of character. That said, I think they handled Jaina's story very well.

However this is more about FF14. Honestly deaths are a fine tool if used effectively. You don't need deaths to have an effective or emotional story. I seriously doubt any of the main leaders are going to die since we know a war between the Allied nations and Garlemald will play a big role in 5.0 and potentially act as a precursor to a new Calamity. As for the Scions, I think they likewise are safe apart from potentially being 'Called'.

My current theory on 5.0 will be our character dealing with the fact they are kind of in a doomed if they do and doomed if they don't scenario. If they beat the Ascians it triggers a Flood of Darkness. If they lose it triggers a Calamity. The WoL/WoD needs to find a third option and it seems that option will require changing something in the past, 'rewriting history'. Since we see Thancred in the trailer my guess is that the past is where the Scions are getting 'Called' to.

I suspect 5.0 will have our character moving back and forward from the present day and the past, trying to achieve that third option and our becoming the Warrior of Darkness will less be us switching sides and more us replacing the Ascians and thus averting the Flood while allowing us to stop their machinations. How that is going to work is anyone's guess. Having the Echo I am betting will allow us to transition backwards and forwards in time.

It is clear we are still going to be friendly with the city states at least at the end of 5.0 because we know crafters and gatherers will have the rebuilding of Ishgard as their endgame content. I still think in the present day Garlemald will be the backdrop as out major enemy simply because even if Elidibus is somehow finished off in 4.5, we now have Solus holding the reins in Garlemald.

Its worth remembering that the teaser is only part of the full trailer. Do remember that the first Stormblood trailer didn't even have a whiff of Doma or the Far East and it was only in the later fanfest they dropped that bomb on us.

A small but important correction: the Voice doesn't say history is to be "rewritten", but "unwritten".

    This tragedy... must be undone.

If history must be unwritten, then let it be unwritten.
That doesn't suggest a "changing the past" plot to me, it suggest that we've ended up in a "bad future" that's so broken it (allegedly) cannot be saved, and so (we are told) we will have to unwind time to the point that we can take a different path.

But then we're hearing this from all this from an unidentified voice in a story where the villains are inclined to manipulate the heroes into furthering their complex cosmic goals, in a trailer designed to manipulate our predictions of what might happen!

Until we at least know the speaker's identity and context, anything the Voice says - or Voices, if the 'dark vision' in 4.4 was not from the same person speaking in the trailer - should be considered to have an "OR SO THEY CLAIM" attached to the end of it.

Also - I said in the original Fan Fest discussion - I'm not sure that the idea of undoing and wiping out a timeline really fits with what we've seen in the story so far. I feel like there's a theme that the past cannot be changed but people have to keep moving forward and make what they can of it.

If there's a "third option" we need to find somewhere, I think it's going to be inbetween "time must be unwound" and "no hope left in this future".

History isn't only mentioned in the trailer. The Voice in 4.4's MSQ mentions that History must be changed. We know that our current path offers twin dooms because they said as much at Fanfest which is also what the Voice tells us. The Voice also carries desperation. 'Only you can stop this'. For me, what YoshiP told us of Shadowbringers at Fanfest somewhat corroborate the Voice's claims. Plus I think there will be less wiping out and more tweaking the existing one.

We already know that time travel can happen though admittedly the irony of Alexander is all the events that had already happened were things Alexander had caused from his time travel. Regardless, where ever we are being 'Called' is significant because we see Thancred in the expansion trailer and he was the first one 'Called'. That suggest we are getting 'Called' somewhere and it is somewhere important. I would be extremely surprised if this whole thing happening to the Scions was some sinister plot to take them out of commission after what that Voice was saying.

I thought it was an artistic trail of "Dark" cloven through the dense "Light" of the area but, now that you mention it, I dun really know.

This may be my first post here, but I am a person who enjoys lore and a good story.

I went back to some of the cutscenes and believe we may have already seen Zodiark if only briefly. At the end of 2.0 after we destroy Ultima and escape Praetorium, as the leaders are declaring the end to the 7th Umbral era, we are pulled into a state similar to the one Hydaelyn calls us to. Instead of seeing a crystal of light, we see a crystal filled with darkness. If Hydaelyn is portrayed as a crystal of light, then it only seems right that Zodiark is portrayed as a crystal of darkness. While I may be reading too much into this, it may have been a prelude to all that is coming in 4.5 and 5.0. I am starting to think since we can't hear Hydaelyn as we once did, it may also be plausible that the Ascians can no longer hear Zodiark's wishes. Zodiark may try to contact us which is what is happening when our fellow Scions souls get plucked from their bodies. It is also plausible that our Echo is shielding us from the effects of the "calling" of our soul. It may be Zodiark's way of telling us to embrace the darkness and prevent the twin dooms from happening. Kind of like a sword of darkness and a shield of light. If we win and beat the Ascians, we get a flood of light. If the Ascians succeed with their plans, we get a flood of darkness.

We need order (light) and chaos (darkness) in equal parts to maintain balance. Feel free to poke holes in this theory.

Oh, we definetly see what is probably Zodiark at the end of 2.0.

In fact, the best evidence I can think of that the Voice in 4.4 is Zodiark is that the screen effect in that sequence is really similar to the screen effect used when we see Zodiark in 2.0.

The voice didn't say that the Ascians winning would cause a Flood of Darkness but rather another Calamity. The final Calamity if what they said at Fanfest was correct. Maybe they don't need all 14 shards to make Zodiark whole. I don't think that would necessarily mean we get a Flood of Darkness but I don't trust it to be a good thing either with how the agents of Zodiark have acted in the past. A group with so little care about the people they are killing off cant really be trusted to have a goal which is in any way ok for those people. That is ignoring the terrible loss of life that a Calamity causes.

I think our twin dooms are a final Calamity and whatever the Ascians are trying to achieve vs a Flood of Light. Whoever the child is from the trailer I suspect they will somehow be repping the Light by the end of 5.X which means we take it on ourselves to boot the Ascians out of the job and take over the role of rep of the Darkness. I suspect this will result in us dealing directly with Zodiark and I am very interested to see his side of things.

From the moment a flood of light and "twin dooms" were mentioned, I was thinking that it was likely referring to the destruction of the Source and the first shard. The latter was on the verge of becoming a void of light without Hydaelyn's intervention and there were no guarantees she'd even be able to fix it. When considering the negative effects the void of darkness has on the Source, a void of light potentially having similar consequences seems probable and it could likewise potentially be exploited for sinister means by the Ascians. We already know they don't necessarily need all of the shards to bring back Zodiark, since the fate of 14th seemed to be viewed as more of an inconvenience then a serious setback, so losing another shard could be considered a worthwhile sacrifice if it can be used to hasten a calamity somehow (Like by establishing a connection to the void of light and allowing its excess to scour the land).

They also kind of teased that the first shard might hold future relevance what with Elidibus telling that other Ascian to observe what's happening over there. It didn't occur to me that he may very well be the mastermind behind the coming calamity after recalling that little bit (As opposed to it just being an accident caused by us and/or others being overzealous about our culling of the Ascians).

That said, I feel like it's probable that we'll be heading off the first shard to resolve whatever potentially calamitous going-ons are happening there, then returning to help progress the campaign against Garlemald once we're certain things won't go awry and/or we know how to keep it from happening. I'm not really convinced the history is going to be unwritten in the most literal of forms, and rather just think that circumstances at the source are so similar to those of the first's presently that it could be considered to be heading down the same path.

This is actually my main focus when I think about it. English is not my mother tongue, so there are subtleties that can go unnoticed from my side.
Excuse my idiot french foreignerness, but for me "to undo" means to go back on something that has been done, and thus I understood that "unwrite" would be similar in meaning, something like erasing and writing all over again.

Now let's go in French linguistics (my irl expertise actually!):
In our version of the trailer "must be undone" is translated by "doit être arrêtée" (literally : must be stopped), and "must be unwritten" is "doit être réécrite" (literally "must be written again").
Hearing that, you can just understand that something is going on, and must be stopped. Now "réécrire" is a tricky translation. Its main use is for writing something new based on something pre-existing, but it can also mean going back on something written and write it all over again.
My point is that the suggested timeline in English (being at time X and changing events Y so that it no longer leads to X) is not so obvious in French. It could actually just mean "this bad thing happened. we need to make up for it, based on what happened"

Any German / Japanese linguist could help in the comparison?
