To all you rich players... How did you do it?

I'm very close to maxing out my two chosen crafting classes for my main. I'm starting to see the true benefits of crafting after seeing that a very popular craftable item is within my grasp. Said item sells for several hundred thousand Gil each.

With my alt, I'm a level 63 miner and level 60 botanist. My earning power as a gatherer is weaker than my earning power as a crafter. However, with gathering, there is no risk involved. You make money from zero investment on anything other than gear repair costs and teleportation fees...

I'd say about half of all the gil I earned came from my own raw efforts while the other half are pretty much just other players flat-out giving it to me. With gathering, I make a steady stream of income by undercutting other players with ore and logs. With crafting, I sold rings and grimoire/codexes.

Gil to me comes and goes a lot. And despite the decent amount that I earned, I have yet to reach official "rich status." I mean, I own an apartment room and bought myself an FC house, but money to me is constantly moving. I have never achieved 10 million Gil sitting on me at a time...

So I ask you... How did YOU do it?

    Thanks.

Thought of getting into crafting but the thought of having all those items terrifies me.

Retainer quick ventures make me a pretty good amount of gil, especially when they bring back the rare black and white dyes. Other than that, I just do lots of roulettes and sell all the mats my creation tomes I can buy.

    Retainers.

They go out and find houses and people with more than they need and return with the surplus to sell off.

The ways I made my gil aren't that profitable anymore, and some basically no longer exist.

These days I don't even try to make gil, but there are plenty of ways to do it still. I made an extra of a glamour item I was crafting for myself and sold it, 750k profit.

If you want to get to that 9 figure mark, there are two very important things to consider. The first, you need to level ALL of your crafters and gatherers. And not just level, you need to max out their gear, obtain the mastercraft and folklore books and anything else you need to be self sufficient. This is for number two, which is to spend as little gil as possible. You can't make gil if you're spending it, so spend wisely when you do. Getting to 9 figures also requires the currency of time, so you want to avoid mistakes like paying the cost for a teleport when just going to the MB would be cheaper. You have to do a lot of time vs cost evaluations to make the smartest move.

After that, and I am sure are already aware of the DoL version of PvP: The market boards.

Another thing to keep in mind when it comes to time vs gil costs is a lot of the items that sale for very high on the MB are usually a major time investment, or being totally blessed by RNGesus. I find it best to home in on highly marketable, lower cost selling items that sell quickly. You probably can sell nothing but soot black dye and make more money by the time a primal weapon will sell. That's just an example just to give you an idea before you decide to spend a schite load of time crafting items that sell for 1 mil+. Those very same items will also have a moderate amount of competition from players thinking just like you, and it may eventually get undercut well below the time you invested.

For me, I don't know if I will ever get past the 9 figure mark. I know I could easily if I invested more time into solely making gil, but I prefer to just sustain a comfortable amount so I can make major purchases without breaking my back like I did with when I purchased my house. And the closer I get to that mark, the more likely I am to make a major purchase to knock it back down.

For me a mixture of stuff. For crafting HQ matters, minions, stuffed characters, housing items and glamour items all sell. I don't worry about looking for the highest price stuff but items that tend to move. I rather sell 5 items 5k quickly that one for 25k that takes a week. I will also use excess tomestones to buy crafting materials and sell those on the MB. Same for marketable dungeon/raid gear. I also saved money by not purchasing items I could get from vendors with gill or seals. A lot of these end up on the MB for higher prices than you can buy them at the vendor for. You mention you have an FC house so look into gardening. Gardening not only supplies exclusive items for crafting but things like Chocobo foods which sell well to players leveling their Chocobos or changing their color. The last thing that comes to mind is the basket in the Doman Enclave. I go there each week to sell stuff I plan to sell to a vendor to get the higher price.

I don't do much of the following because they don't sit right with me, but:
    • Don't gather mats yourself unless the only listings on the mb are overpriced - You'll make more crafting than you would gathering, even with the cost of buying mats factored in
    • Undercut by 1 gil - The average player doesn't know about taxes and city states and will buy the lowest priced item. Undercutting by larger amounts can see you move stock faster, but it can tank the price by too much
    • Buy items from npc merchants and put them up for sale on the mb at many times what you paid - You'll get players that will pay the extra gil for the convenience of not having to teleport around the world, as well as players that don't know npc merchants sell the items for much less. Fashion Report items are a good example
    • Buy items when they are cheap on the mb and relist at prices many times higher. Shortly before a new patch, materia will be bought up and then relisted once the patch drops
    • Run alts - Allows you to have more/all specialists at your disposal, more inventory space and more listings
    • An item's value is what players are willing to pay for it - Glam weapons that cost very little to make went for several million because the buyers were unaware of what went into making them

That's for crafting. If you are skilled with combat, selling runs will get you as much or more than crafting, depending on skill and some other factors.
