All of the major content is gated behind MSQ. If you're skipping all of the cutscenes out of an expectation that they will be bad then you're skipping the heart of the game and where a large amount of the developer resources have been spent and will continue to be spent. There's an extension to MSQ every major patch and a huge amount of story added on an expansion pack.

I'm afraid you're looking in the wrong game. Even the endgame doesn't have lasting impact.

I think we're running out of features that we're missing as far as the global standard for MMORPGs goes. If I had to say, I think that in order to prevent other MMOs from catching up, we should flesh out what it means to "live" in the world of FFXIV with things that only FFXIV can do, like Perform and the housing roleplay stuff."

Skipping the cutscenes, then complaining about a bad MSQ?

You couldn't be more wrong. The ARR story is badly told but the HW story is widely hailed as a masterpiece. It really is not more of the same. Far from it. But you don't know because you're skipping the cutscenes.

I'm not even going to bother deconstructing the rest of your post. You appear to have a strong distaste for working through a story, and the vast majority of content in this game has story attached. Even crafting and gathering quests. If you can't even deal with the MSQ story then I honestly recommend you play something else.

Please understand that I'm not inherently averse to a story. Far from it. I've played other Final Fantasy games, and in particular the stories of FF6 and FF7 enthralled and captivated me when I played them as a kid and even when I revisit them now. As I've grown older and my tastes have changed, due to exposure to different kinds of books, movies, and games, my appreciation of those stories has not diminished in the least, in no small part because of the way in which they are told. As Cloud, I never had to run around Midgard doing pizza deliveries before the the next pivotal story element showed up, I could just progress through the story as it was written without cheap diversion tactics thrown in to inflate the playtime. Some consider the random encounters a roadblock, but I thought the turn-based JRPG battle system was quite fun with its subsystems like collecting spells, etc., and the boss fights were actually challenging: sometimes I would fail them and have to restrategize, use different materia, different items, different spells.

The FFXIV story - exciting as it got at the very the end of ARR, and at the very end of 2.55 - really is paced nothing like the stories I just mentioned. Probably because it is an MMO, it has to have filler. I understand. But then what about the challenge? I'm told all the challenge is concentrated in the vaunted "endgame", after all the story is done. Because I'm playing a game, and seeking challenge, instead of watching a movie or reading a book, that just makes me want to get to the endgame as soon as possible, especially because doing the MSQ feels like playing a solo RPG without solo RPG subsystems, fighting enemies that pose no threat, running menial errands despite being a Warrior of Light, collecting green balls. Still, whatever, right? I just roll my eyes, it's an MMO, and hey, WoW was like this too, except it didn't gate quite as much of its content behind quite as long a main story. Yet precisely because it's an MMO I expect to partake in MMO style content like raids and dungeons that offer pertinent loot, with other players that I'm not just paired with provisionally, I want to face challenges that forces me to examine the way I play and change it, instead of just lol facerolling through whichever new dungeon or trial is trickled out to me after another 20 quests and a cutscene. To be sure, I enjoy FFXIV's gameplay, as it is in dungeons and trials and raids. I enjoy it so much I want to tackle the most challenging fights it has to offer. Yet to do so requires me to play through what feels like an entirely different game, a needlessly long, easy, singleplayer game, that could by all means have a great story sandwiched between all the generic errand-running, but am I really expected not to skip it if it's keeping me from the core gameplay proper?

Heavensward might actually have a good story, and I may even enjoy it when I view the cutscenes later at my leisure, when I'm in the mood to watch a movie, not play a video game. But you are wrong to fault me for skipping the story when it functions in practice as a roadblock. Many of you are veterans compared to me, and probably played through this content when it was new and live, and there were other people going through it for the first time, experiencing it together, which I suspect played no small role in motivating you and keeping you interested. I on the other hand cannot overstate how desolate these areas are now, rarely I'll pass somebody else on a black chocobo to remind me that I'm playing a multiplayer game, but that's all. It really is an unreasonable amount of catchup to expect someone new to play. And that's the long and short of it.

Trust me when I say that the endgame is not worth rushing towards. If you're not enjoying the game as it is right now, you are missing out on most of the game. Once you reach endgame you'll have a few fights you can repeat weekly for loot and that's it. And that loot will not last very long. As soon as the next challenging fight is released, you already begin the process of replacing it before you've even begun the next fight.

Enjoy the game as it is right now, where you are right now. Or don't. It's your choice to make. But you're missing out if you're just going to skip it to get to the end.

Also, the later areas are not going to be any more populated. Everyone is in instances, or at housing areas, starting cities, or at the "endgame" city where everyone just afks. You're not going to find people out in the open world. That's just how this game's open world is.
