Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?*
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system.*Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

Let me take a damn break! Without losing my 30m house and 20m plus furniture in it!
I hope you are the original owner of your current housing plot, cause if you bought that house after it was auto-demolished from someone else, and you complain about the auto-demolish, some might consider that to be hypocritical.

No thanks, I'd prefer a house with a yard I can decorate.

I agree that personal housing should be more than just a larger apartment, and this is something that instanced housing could handle nicely. I'm definitely on the team of "time to start over, your housing system sucks as it is". Maybe keep the existing wards for those people who want that ghost-town feel, and then release proper instanced housing to ALL characters.

I always think of WildStar when thinking of instanced housing. They allow so much freedom there, massive plots, AND you can form a small instanced community with a few of your friends. Although, I'm sure SE could find a way to muck that up as well.

I wouldn't mind if it was an instanced house. Would also be a lot easier on the servers I think. Current housing wards, the servers have to keep the instances open, they are treated like any other zone, except they also have to load all the garden decorations for each ward for every player that enters. Switching to instanced housing would prob use up less resource.

I lost one house to the auto demolish but I have bought both the houses I've owned from release.

I just gave my large to a friend because I need to focus irl. I just couldn't bother thinking what happens to the house or that I'd have to get back in 45 days.

Then again I always liked house hunting, it gives the feeling of achievment so there's that when I get back in the game.

Statements like that are broken all the time in gaming. Sega, Nintendo, Capcom, SE, insert any other gaming company here have broken promises to their gamers all.the.time. It's not new and expecting them to keep every single word the same is silly. PEOPLE in general don't do that for crap smaller in scale. But I guess people who have that complaint NEVER broken a promise, NEVER stepped back on a word, NEVER changed their mind. BS!

Things change, of course, but it's not a good thing when you continually go back on what you said. Would you be friends with someone who did this? States one thing, sometimes adamantly, and then a bit later does a complete 180? How far would you trust this friend?

    Well that depends.

If my friend 5 years ago said he was going to continue doing the bare minimum in life and then he went back on his word and now wants to do more and have a positive impact on life, I'm not going to hang him for that.

Point is the circumstances around someone or a company changes. Sometimes for ill and sometimes for the better.

Yeah, but I'm sure people still complained or drag them through the mud if that happens. Same as here. I'll give you a recent example: No Man's Sky. No one's perfect obviously but that doesn't mean people can't get annoyed and they will if you pitch a product that's supposed to have x things and hype it up, then it doesn't have some of them.

Is it a big deal? Nah not really but often people don't appreciate being lied to especially when there is money involved.

But context is key here. He didn't lie as he had no plans to change it at the time. Doesn't mean things can't change, and they did. I dunno, just seems like people expect perfection when they themselves are far from perfect. Thats what it feels like anyway.
