I agree that words without action mean little.
But players also need to learn that developer statements are intents and not promises unless specifically phrased as a promise. Things can change from the original intent for various reasons without developers intending to mislead or just saying things for the sake of trying to placate players. A lot of times, concepts that look good on paper just don't work out in practice.
You will continue to be disappointed in the future if you take every "we plan to do this" statement as a promise.
I personally find it troubling that this is the thing that folks got in an up rage about. Trust me I understand the mindset, but I can't help but feel like this was a fight better left alone. For myself it left a dark cloud over the celebration. I dabbled in 1.0 and have played off and on since 2.0 fairly seriously. But I can't help but think that the experience is the priceless part, not some earrings most have all but forgotten. Ushering the game in through the turmoil should fill you with pride rather than misplaced rage for something so trivial. We have a long way too go, with many changes ahead of us. As a community we should probably weigh in more heavily on changes that need to be implemented to keep the game fresh and exciting, rather than worrying about how unfair giving people vanity gear that was collecting dust in your glamour dresser was or wasn't.
Lala for Hire
Its not about that one tiny earring alone. Its just another point, where SE clearly aimed for new players, even those who stay only 2 months. But long time players, veterans, even legacy players getting even more disappointed the longer the game exists.
Yeah, its like those "the game was better back then" statements. Sure, many things became better. New classes, new race, new raids and mechanics. But some things are getting worse or nothing changed at all.
- Long time Veteran Rewards? Gone.
- Fun and challenging PvP? Simplified and dead.
- Deep Dungeon? Just a PotD-clone with nothing new.
- Relic Weapons? Dont get me started about this...
- Expert Roulette? Just big faceroll dungeons... Great "Expert" content (not).
- Things not possible due Server performance? Only possible if you pay for (retainers)
...
Certainly, making a big discussion about a itsy bitsy tiny earring may be overreacting. But its another (even small) example about the path FFXIV want to go. And I m afraid of it. There is so much potential in this game, but SE still working on to many wrong parts of the game.
- What about increasing slots for glamour?
- What about new character customization options?
- What about more content for advanced players (not only grind stuff)?
I better hope, 4.4 will be promising. Pagos and HH were disappointing (not because the features itself, but releasing it way to late).

Reading too much of the forums makes me very sad and apathetic.
Pretty embarrassing that people actually complained about these earrings so much that yoshi replied.
You say "embarrassing", others might say "mission accomplished".
Me, I didn't really care either way, but if it's ever stated that something is going to be exclusive I think they should stick to it.

It's a little worrying. It sets a dangerous precedence...and I'm a little baffled by the implication that it was more than just a vocal minority of people who were against the issue. Of those complaining, many did not even play 1.0 themselves and boast a long post history of expressing discontent with many aspects of the game. Quite a few 1.0 players spoke up to say that they did not mind the decision at all...though they were drowned out by the vocal minority. This was the case across all regions. I took the liberty of checking out the other threads regarding the issue with the help of a translation.
I don't doubt that this will backfire. The developers are already very reluctant to try anything new or do things differently and so there's now a real risk that people will point to this as an example as to how FFXIV needs to keep to its word at every turn even at the cost of stagnation.
If it were something you cared about, it wouldn't be baffling. If they commemorated the introduction of feast by giving everyone the same top 100 rewards of that season, people would be mad. Or fifth anniversary of ultimate by the ultimate weapons. As I understand it, it was a hard trial at the end of 1.0 that served as a memento for legacy players. All that had to be done was add "replica" in front of the name.
Thank you Yoshi for doing this. Even though I don't have a dog in this fight, legacy players did stick with the game through its darkest times, and its nice you consider their feelings.
