Additionally, if SE released a content patch that was nothing but new appearances, you can bet people would be on the forums screaming about the lack of content because items generally aren't considered content. In contrast, a content patch that had several new trials, but offered no new items would be recognized as having content, but being unrewarding.
It wasn't talking about the earrings clashing with anything. Coil would've likely already been done the storyboarding phase at this time. Nael Van Darnus in that form had no business being there when all the content they've released had storyline ties outside of collaborations. Coil was literally a love letter to 1.0 among other things.

The fight as it was would probably be as much of a trainwreck (I mean this as incompatible, 1.0 was a different beast) as when Blizzard did their anniversary event with Molten Core because of how much the game changed. Hey guys, look at these old annoying mechanics they had to deal with! Disregarding the spell changes over that many years like dispels having a cooldown. It was still fun even though I had to take the reins of a PuG. It was barely scraping by as "Molten Core" though.

While it's not SE, Blizzard made many item appearances unobtainable when they revamped the old world in Cataclysm. This wasn't done to make them exclusive or prestigious, but simply because they didn't fit into what Blizzard wanted to do and they didn't feel it was worth the effort to preserve them. This meant that for many years many of these items were exclusive to characters that had done certain content prior to the Cataclysm. Nonetheless, Blizzard has brought back some of those old models over time as they saw fit. For instance, a recent anniversary event saw the temporary return of some vanilla world bosses that had been casualties of the revamp scaled up to level cap with level cap versions of their old loot tables, which still used those old appearances. Items that had been unavailable for nearly a decade were suddenly made obtainable again because the unobtainability was incidental rather than deliberate.
I'm pretty certain Blizzard didn't come out and say they were going to stay that way either and actually stated it was being worked on and to report missing items. Things like Arena mounts on the other hand have been though. There won't ever be any new Scarab Lord's either. The Emerald Dragons, Blizzard likes resolving story arcs outside of the game and leaving everyone that was following it in-game confused like Sunwell. Their removal was very much intentional for that reason, I believe it was stated as so as well.

The Grand Marshal/High Warlord gear is also heavily restricted if that character never got those ranks in vanilla. They asked the community later on how they felt about them being made available through RBG's. The community spoke up and they left them as is.
"But the community's impression on prestige items like this is important. We appreciate all of your feedback on the idea."
"Update: Thanks for the feedback. We have decided to not make these sets available."
It's funny for how much I chew out Blizzard for what they did to their other games like destroying modding. They actually communicate changes in WoW. They for the most part actually try to not leave everyone in the dark. That's part of what really gets me over this event, they just dropped it on an event page without a word. I really wouldn't be surprised if they never mention why they did it either. SE's communication has dropped off severely since ARR or even the beta, I'm not sure which anymore.

I don't think it's unreasonable to see some of them pop back up as SE finds places they feel they fit, even if they were perhaps relatively rare in 1.0. I realize you're probably looking at the "only intended for 1.0" bit, but that honestly looks to me like a generic "we don't want to do this" response, in which it basically just restates the situation, but dressed up to look like an explanation.
It's not going to get anybody anywhere trying to discern what made them say it behind the scenes. They're not a small business and this all gets filtered through public relations including YoshiP's antics on stream since the beginning.

When they butter it up as a reason to stay subscribed I feel its pretty obvious what they meant. This situation plainly shouldn't have happened. It's not a walking-on-eggshells problem tying their arm behind their back (not your words). It was a small list of things they stressed to 1.0 players to get, now, if you wanted them because they were going away. There's nothing wrong with them showing a little more value to those that were there at the time.

To each their own, I suppose. Blizzard may communicate more but it's done in such a way that extensive datamining is allowed and encouraged to the point where pretty much every aspect of a new content patch or expansion is revealed months in advance. That kills any sense of mystery, especially when it comes to storytelling elements. I'm glad that FFXIV does not go down that route, since it allows for more surprises - even if some elements of the game conform to a very predictable model.

I won't add anything further in regards to the White Ravens being a reward for the event, as I've already stated my own thoughts on that subject, and respect both sides of the arguement.

In regards to the possible return of 1.0's final battle in this event however, in particular a comment someone made earlier about Nael's model apparently existing in the game files, ignoring the possibility that is simply a dummied model that SE has no intention of actually using and was simply in the game files for 'possible future use'; based on the artwork for the Rising, instead of a trial battle replicating the Rivenroad battle in 1.0 (because, technically that is what T9 in Second Coil of Bahamut is already meant to be), it's possible that this event will instead replicate the situation that 1.0 had in the final weeks of service where high-level monsters would invade the three cities and actually attack anyone who happened to be out in the street, including multiple copies of Nael (the artwork shows malboros along with Garlean soldiers with Dalamud looming overhead so that alone is a good indication of how this event is going to turn out, presumably via FATEs that will randomly take place in each city's main street).

Either way, we'll find out in the next few days anyway.

    humiliating
I've seen people use this word a few times throughout the thread. I don't think it means what you think it means.

To humiliate someone is to shame and embarrass them.

Giving away these earrings to other people does nothing to shame those who had them already.

Maybe it devalues their achievement (if you see it that way), but that's not what the word means.

I do agree, i started playing with 2.0 but seeing reward item like this is distasteful.

I just hope they aren't giving it like it is nothing. I hope there atleast a link to the White Raven.

Also it would have been easy to simply name the item Replica White Raven Earring.

I played 1.0 like I said before I think its a nice idea they are giving them out. Gives people who didn't play 1.0 a chance to have this item. It doesn't have any real use in the game anymore besides cosmetic so I see no problem with them giving it out in the new event it should be fun.

76 pages of QQ over a pair of earrings that the majority of players didn't even know about until someone decided this event was somehow ruining their memories.

    This is kind of amazing.

I wonder how many will wear these solely to troll salty 1.0 players to be honest. Yes, it is a suboptimal to do as I do agree that some things could stay exclusive and special for people who participated in a certain event even though I am generally opposed to timed exclusives in online games thanks to the bad taste they leave in many freemium games (there are two things that makes me quit F2P games, P2W PvP focus and timed exclusives), but I do think the overreaction is huge as it is simply an earring glamour item at this point.

Like, could they not simply have given away iLvl 1 lookalikes instead? Would have been a much smoother move to be fair.

I love it when people bring up screenshots or posts from people that are 6+ years old and then take it as the word of God like nothing ever changes.
