6 years Theodric, not 5. 1.0 ended in late 2012. Now ARR did launch 5 years ago, so you have that number right.Nobody is taking anything away. Nobody is preventing 1.0 players from taking pride in their accomplishments or support for 1.0.
Yet at some point, a line needs to be drawn. 1.0 was five years ago and FFXIV has had not one but two expansions since it launched for a second time. There's going to be another expansion next year.
As someone who actually looks back at 1.0 with a sense of awe and wonder it's actually pretty disheartening to see how some of the 1.0 players are acting within this thread. I offer my immense thanks to those 1.0 players who have been reasonable and are happy to grant those of us who started in ARR and beyond their approval in this endeavor.
I, for one, have been wanting certain items from 1.0 to be added to the game once more. I don't think everything should be unlocked and suddenly made available, though two pairs of earrings is a very minor thing in the grand scheme of things.
So I offer the players who are in favour of the earrings being added my immense gratitude. I'm actually going to make it a point to order a bottle of champagne to coincide with the seasonal event going live. Once I have a pair of the earrings for myself I shall make a toast in honour of those who have used their voice as a means of support.
Day 4.... Still alive. Hot dang

Ultimately, I can understand wanting to keep one's trophies unique for the effort put in prior. However, at the end of the day we have to come to terms that anything can be trivialized at a moment's notice. The game has a long history of making hard to obtain glamours absurdly easy to get in later patches like New World and Thav sets as well as minions that used to be so rare they sold for 12m a piece and now go for 90k.
I'm not saying don't argue about it. That's your right to do so. But expect that as time goes on more accomplishments will become irrelevant, and hopefully new ones will take their place. Eventually all of it will be moot when the servers finally shut down.
You know what they say, don't beat a dead horse, thrash it.
So...go play XI? Last I checked, the servers are still up and running. I'm not really sure why some people continue to play FFXIV if they dislike it so much.

Part. 2
Getting a relic was just an insane task, requiring not only a gigantic amount of time, steps and money/resources, but to be skilled, as it was locked behind 2 of the 3 hardest fights of 1.0. Since 2.0, the relics are just a grind, in 1.0 it was locked behind the hardest fights.
What people need to realise here, is that while there's around ~0.04% of FFXIV players that cleared Ultimate (it's not 1%, not even 0.1%), it was something similar with the last stage of relic and Rivenroad (Hard), it's a tiny % of 1.0 players who won them.
Those White Ravens, it's not about an exclusivity, it's about a trophy unlikely to occur more than once.
I won a Cinéma trophy in my career, Tennis tournaments trophies, and they're all equal to me, they took the same investment and passion, and I kept all along the eyes on the prize. And now the prize of one is handed out, not even as a replica.
Something like this, in those conditions of a game on a countdown before shutting down, it's one of a kind.
That's why it grieves those who sacrificed that much to get them, it's sad and underwhelming. People lampooning it is regrettable.
Replicas would have been a smarter choice.

But it may not be just "handed out". If it is, then yeah, I can agree with you, that would be in poor taste. But we don't know until the actual event occurs. IF we got to do the fight, as close as technically feasible, with the same item and character level, and we completed it successfully, would that not be close enough to the same thing?Part. 2

I mean.. would that be okay? Or is it the combination of "a very hard fight" + "servers shutting down and we won't get to experience this as it was"? (I'm legitimately asking, not trying to stir up drama).
If that wouldn't be acceptable, what item from 1.0 COULD make a return and not face this backlash?
"We want bunny suits for guys!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Ishgard housing!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Viera!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Cloud's motorcycle!" -- OK! ✅
"We want Blue Mage!"-- OK! ✅
"We want the ability to earn past Feast rewards!" - OK! ✅ to armor
"... and mounts?

What would be totally okay, is something of the same overall difficulty. But it may not be just "handed out". If it is, then yeah, I can agree with you, that would be in poor taste. I'm comparing difficulties with the % of people who would manage to clear it. Since in 1.0 the % of 1.0 players winning the White Ravens was ridiculously minuscule, I would expect something similar.
The closest I can think of is what Kharlan said, UCoB Milestone, not clearing entirely UCoB, but clearing Twintania and then Nael in UCoB, meaning the 6 first minutes of UCoB out of the 19 min.
Not only % wise it's really close, as it should be a % way lower than Savage, but not as low as Ultimate, but where it makes all sense, is that these earrings are based on Nael 1.0 head piece armour.
With this, story wise, lore wise it would make totally sense, plus anniversary wise and current content wise, it would also make totally sense, as UCoB got released recently and is still completely relevant.
This would answer the legitimate demand of players who just asked to have a chance to get them as a real trophy as well, to earn it.
But Stormfur, this upcoming Rising 2018, it's a level 15 event, that don't happens in STORMBLOOD, but that is available to people that just own ARR.
If I was the developer, I would have addressed all this the following way, to make the 3 parties entirely happy, without needing to spend any game resources on it:
- I would have put the original White Ravens as a reward for clearing Nael in Unending Coil of Bahamut (Ultimate), which means clearing those 6 first minutes of the fight.
The % of players capable of doing that is close enough to the % of players who managed to win the White Ravens in 1.0.
This would pleased the players who are just asking to get a fair chance of getting them as a real earned trophy (as well as putting more incentive to get into that fight).- I would have also made Replicas, that I would have handed during the event, for people asking them for Glamour.
1.0 players, ARR HW SB players asking a way to earn them as a real similar trophy, and people wanting them for glamour, would all be happy, they would not feel cheated, they would feel understood and supported, making the developer fairly enough trustworthy.
Considering it's not even possible to get the earrings through the original method anymore it really shouldn't matter if they are replicas now or not. A replica in the current incarnation of FFXIV only happens if there is a method in-game to obtain original items (non-replicas), such as working on a relic and having the choice to purchase previous stages or the replica Makai gear available in Gold Saucer. In the end the earrings are a defunct item from a game (or version of a game) that no longer exists. If it was still going then it would be a different story, but it's not. For SE to even bring them back should be seen as an honour rather than a travesty.
Sooo... if the event item is renamed with "replica" in front will people calm down?
I understand enjoying exclusive items, and trophies from old conquests but some of you 1.0ers get those torches and pitchforks going over the silliest things.
On a side note I don't even care for the earrings and was going to toss them in storage...
