    My Eyes Hurt! LOL

I was told that this belongs more in general chat so I'm re-posting it here.

Since i left WoW and began playing FF14 a year ago i really haven't missed it too much. I have found the environment of FF14 so amazing in its texture colors and attention to detail that its been such a wonderful experience seeing the amazing world that was created here. The Avatars have far better appearance with the skin textures smooth looks and delicate features from eyes to fingers to the hair color and layers. It really is an amazing Game experience aesthetically. But I will say that i miss one thing BIG TIME...
OMG THERE IS SO MUCH DIALOG TO READ!!!!! In WoW regardless of it being a Cut scene or even an active quest line there was usually voice acting that not only added to the experience but thankfully spared the oh so tedious reading of dialog. But even Dialog in WoW wasn't as endless as it is here. I cant imagine that with all the nickle and dimeing that SE has done to squeeze every penny from its players, to get extra storage metallic dyes, new looks and many kinds of furniture and lawn items and so on, that they cant manage to find a few reasonably talented unknown voice actors to record some dialog and spare us the endlessly long speeches and monologueing in a antiquated language that makes me want to smash my head in the wall cause its just TOO MUCH!. If i wanted to read this much i would get a book. I do read books but when i play a game like this i prefer to just listen to some good voice acting. From the Main quest to Side stories that include elaborate and lengthy cut scenes there just needs to be some voice acting done. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! LOL,, Just a thought.

Voice acting is expensive, from what I've heard. Get all the characters with a voice (currently) and then multiply by 4 (since there's English, Japanese, French and German voice acting).

As much as I would like there to be more voice acting, chances are SE would probably have to sacrifice something (gameplay, cosmetics, etc) if they were to fully voice the game. Defo wouldn't mind the Omega raid bosses (or just final boss, like in the Ivalice raids) to have a voice, though. Hearing Dave Wittenberg's voice in the Kefka fight would have been lovely.

Truth be told, I originally thought this thread would be complaining about the Heatwave in Eureka Pagos... if constantly reading text hurts your eyes, then stay clear of Eureka Pagos during Heatwaves (which is pretty much all the time). Wearing sunglasses in real life is highly recommended.

Okay, first off, you can circumvent the character limit on posts by going back and editing in what you couldn't fit the first time. So no need to make multiple posts. Also, formatting is your friend. Considering the subject matter of your thread, I'm sure you can relate to how annoying it is to read large blocks of text.

On to the actual topic of the thread. If reading lots of text on a computer screen actually does hurt your eyes (and isn't just hyperbole) then you really ought to go see an optometrist. My husband had the same issue and we found out that he needed a new prescription for his glasses after he got a new monitor. Forcing your eyes to constantly strain might cause permanent damage. You also might try adjusting your resolution settings to see if you can find something more comfortable for you.

If the pain comment is really just an exaggeration, well then the only thing I can say is that FF14 is much more story driven than WoW. So there is a lot more, you know, story to read. In most cases I would love more voice acting but I can totally understand if SE just doesn't budget for it. Also, once in a great while voiced cut-scenes can be annoying (for me personally) because I tend to read much faster than the scene plays out with actors, so I'm sitting there waiting for them to finish. (But I am fully aware that is just my opinion and wouldn't dream of trying to impose my personal preferences on the rest of the playerbase.)

The only real useful suggestion I can make in this case, is that you can skip the dialog if you just don't have the patience for it. I think it's default keybound to the space bar.

Because unlike Blizzard, Enix are a tiny indie company?

Perhaps ProactivelyAntagonisticGamerChick would have been a better choice of username.

At any rate, the voice acting for this game is pretty terrible after they switched up all of the voices and most characters got worse. I like the voice stuff regardless, but I could really do without having everything voiced. It's much faster to just read it anyway. WoW's entire manner of story presentation is pretty different from this game and wouldn't really work for it.

Activision Blizzard is quite a bit bigger than Square Enix and on top of that Blizzard only develops and maintains a few titles with World of Warcraft being a substantially bigger MMORPG than FFXIV, so there likely is a significant difference in resource availability.

As a former WoW player myself:

Welcome to a game where the writers actually give a shit.

If your eyes hurt from reading text on a screen, I think you should consider at least reading glasses because obviously that problem is going to persist outside of XIV then, it's not just the game's fault. I get eye strain all of the time because I'm not only working on the computer a lot for majority of my time, but I'm also staring at a TV screen for gaming and a laptop at the same time. I have non-prescription reading glasses that I bought from Wal-Mart that I use when I need my eyes to focus harder, it helps a lot.

It may take you wearing them for a few days to adjust, but your eyes will over time. If you start getting headaches from wearing your eyeglasses right away, it means you need to gradually get your eyes used to them and wear them in intervals, but not lengthy periods. I even use my reading glasses when I play mobile games on my phone because of the small text and screen brightness. Reading is a facet of life, you can't ignore it and it's better to broaden your vocabulary outside of your comfort zone, than be lazy honestly.

As someone else said above me, Blizzard is a financially larger and more stable company. Can people please stop throwing around the term "Indie company" when they're using it wrongly? Blizzard has been in the MMO business longer than SE and quite frankly, are better at micromanaging their resources and finances.

Blizzard actually puts money made from WoW back into WoW. SE makes money from XIV and funnels it into KH3 or the FF7 Remake.

How many voiced cutscenes does WoW have and in how many languages? This is a legitimate question as I haven't played much of WoW for one specific reason: no controller support. I cannot play a game with mouse and keyboard as that just kills my hands.

WoW comes in like 10 different languages and I believe they have fully voiced everything for every supported language.

I couldn't tell you how many voiced cutscenes they have though. They weren't terribly common, mostly being saved for big moments in raids, but in Legion they began to voice pretty much everything and that will continue in the new expansion.
