Why are the moogles like they are?

After years of just being a tank and dps I finally got brave enough to chase crafting and after days of beast tribe quest i finally have a lvl70 weaver.

but one thing that irked my patience was the moogles, I remembered how terrible their questline was in HW and after having to deal with them again for crafting I almost lost it. why are they so annoying? so dumb, lazy, inept etc, i can go on for awhile.

I wont say i hate them cause there are like 2 moogles i actually sorta maybe like but overall from every FF that has moogles i cant stand this iteration because they are so darn weird and unlikeable.

i honestly feel the namazu envision the moogles i've always liked, they're a likeable and fun bunch, but the moogles at moghome....terrible, is there a reason they were designed like that, as i go through the lore i cant find one, the closest I can come to which is my own personal one is that cause they're so high up in the clouds it just makes them a bunch of airheads.

Recently moogles across the franchise have become like that (seriously, spend 5 minutes in Dissidia NT without turning the moogle tutorial off). I think its just a design choice to make moogles mischievious and immature, it suits their aesthetic as weightless pom balls, and I don't really have a problem with it.

You could ask this about any race in the game, and it all comes down to "because the devs decided to make them that way".

yeah, i guess that does work, it just seems the moogles are sooooo far off the mark, it's almost comical considering how stupid the moogles are that they are paired with the dragons, who are so reserved and serious

There's two main tribes of moogles in FFXIV and they are culturally very different from each other. The Moogles of the Twelveswood are invisible to people most of the time and only very few people know that they're in the Twelveswood at all. Most of the people who know about them are Pajal'i and you, because you have the Echo which lets you see them and talk to them. They're presented as being the less mischievous and more genuinely helpful of the two Moogle tribes. They also don't have as serious a responsibility as the other Moogle tribe has. I see them as being less annoying, but also less compelling then the other Moogle tribe.

The Moogles of the Churning Mists are much more mischievous then the Twelveswood moggles are. They like to play tricks on each other and on other people. On the flip side, the only "people" in the Churning Mists that they have contact with on a regular basis are themselves and the dragons. For the past couple of centuries, they've been cut off from the rest of Eorzea, so their concept of "normal" is probably very weird. That said, I have a feeling that them being more mischievous might be a bit of a coping mechanism for them. The reason why they're still in the Churning Mists is because they made a deal with Hrasvelgr to take care of Zenith and the surrounding area for him. That includes keeping Nidhogg's forces out of it and has resulted in them making friends with some of Hrasvelgr's brood. They're also credited with inspiring the "Flame in the Abyss" the Dark Knights use (yes, Dark Knight is a moogle job). So for all their mischievousness, they can get serious about some things. I'd just say they're incredibly stubborn about maintaining their "cute and fluffy" side as well.

The last Ivalice raid also introduced a third moogle tribe. That of the desert moogles from Dalmasca. But I'd wait for the raid to be done before drawing any conclusions about them.

thanks for the info, never occured to me the churning mist moogles attitude was a coping mechanism, but that kinda makes sense considering they were locked away and had to deal with a super long war between the dragons and ishgard, i guess trying to be happy all the time makes a bit of sense.

I think some of the Moogle oddity can be traced back, in a way, to FFXI. In that game, Moogles existed, but in a sort of "meta", administrative fashion. While exceptions existed ("A Moogle Kupo d'Etat", for example, being one of the rare exceptions), Moogles were intended to be player aids, and not part of the actual world - the player's house-moogle primary among them. As such, they had a sort of breezy, casual, TUTORIAL sort of manner of speaking, as well as lots of self-deprecating humor poking fun at the fact that they tended to stay indoors and away from the action.

I think that sort of attitude was carried over to FFXIV - except now, they actually ARE part of the world. To justify their attitude, they were made reclusive, with the ability to hide themselves from the perceptions of the other races. So much so, that Moogles in general were thought by many to be a myth. As the game evolved, though, Moogles started popping up in prominent roles more and more often, to the point where they're a common enough sight that it's hard to believe that anyone would consider them to be a myth - and also to the point where their lazy childishness starts to push the envelope of reasonable suspension of disbelief...

Well at least their favourite food is kupo nuts as it should be this time around and not that silly mistranslated 'pearl clover fruit' 1.0 had them obsessed with.

    'Wee nibble?' Riiiight...
