In a recent interview with PC Gamer magazine, Lead developer Ion Hazzikostas stated:

"If the team had their way, none of the story would be revealed before an expansion, but the benefits of a beta outweigh keeping the entire story a surprise. . . Blizzard tries to keep major story points hidden until they are experienced in the live game. This is mostly done by excluding major cutscenes from testing periods."
It is extremely apparent that in FFXIV many of the past and present content that wasn't well received could have used beta testers giving honest feedback. Speaking truth to power.

The developers of this game need to understand and be mindful of the fact that not all players play content the same. Group think and echo chambers are extremely dangerous things that halt ingenuity.
