Unexpected Error Upon Quit

A friend of mine (she can't use the forums yet) had an issue come up when she logged out of the game. After a lag spike and losing her connection to the server (two separate events, the latter she had to quit out of the game entirely and log back in), she got this error when she quit out of the game.

This notice came up twice in a row (clicked OK, it came up once again, clicked OK again, FINAL FANTASY XIV closed). She's on a laptop connecting via WiFi, if that helps.

Please have your friend try the following suggestions:

- Switch to DirectX 9 mode (select ‘Config’ from the launcher)
- Update/reinstall Graphics card drivers
- Disable all programs/overlays running in the background
- Perform a clean boot*
- Set compatibility mode to Windows 7/8**
- Make sure that any anti-virus software they have has the appropriate exceptions
- Install game on C drive (The same drive as the Operating System)

*To perform a clean boot for Windows 8/10: Open the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC. For Windows 7: Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press Enter to start the System Configuration utility. On the General tab, click the Selective startup option, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all. For Mac: Restart the Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The Apple logo appears on your display. Release the Shift key when you see the login window.

**To change compatibility mode, right click on the exe file (Default location: C:\Program Files (x86)\SquareEnix\Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn\boot\ffxivboot.exe), right click it and select ‘Properties.’ Select the ‘Compatibility’ tab and select an earlier version of Windows (most likely 8 or 7).

After updating the graphics driver, she got a similar error. It was two windows in a row again. The first was the same, but the second read differently.

After that, I tried turning off DirectX 11 support. When logging in, the green Play button said "DirectX 9.0c" in small print at the bottom. Clicking the button, however, caused the game to fail to launch, citing this.

A fatal DirectX error has occurred.(1000003d)

Then I turned DirectX 11 support back on. I tried turning on compatibility mode for Windows 8 next. The first error still appears when closing the game. That was followed immediately by the first error I mention in this post before the game actually closed. I turned off compatibility mode at this point.

The game's already installed on the C drive, as that's the only drive this laptop has. At this point I opened the task manager. For startup programs, there were only ten things listed, some of them antivirus software. I disabled them all, shut down the laptop, and turned it back on (read: I didn't choose to "restart"). I opened the task manager again to double-check that the programs I disabled were still listed, and they were (and still disabled). The errors still came up when I quit the game. At this point, I enabled the startups again.

EDIT: I did some research and found out a few things that might be the cause. It's probably not the Game Bar on Windows 10, which I already had completely off. System scans showed no problems. Microsoft was essentially unable to help in any meaningful way. I did, however, find out that the game works just fine in windowed mode. I'd rather not be stuck with that, if possible.

It's only upon closing the game. If the game's not in full screen mode when I close it, there's no error. We've been running it in borderless windowed mode lately.
