    Edit:
My original post below was a bit inaccurate as Endeavor rightly pointed out!

    Original Post:

Not a big fan of most Monster Hunter sets myself but I admit I was a little underwhelmed with their interpretation of it, especially since they had tried to get breakable parts into the game but didn't have the time to - and considering the effort the MHW team had to put in on their side - a little part of me wondered if the effort was mutual. Perhaps my ignorance about all that's involved is making me unfair though.

I find that...odd considering that MH has maintained its T rating despite being bloodier and having more graphic violence, which includes being able to remove parts (Though it's generally limited to tails, horns, and other unimportant parts that wouldn't impede the monsters very much).

I'd assume it's because that coupled with the existing things that got XIV its T rating would've pushed it over the edge?

    I'd say that's likely.

MHW is T for Blood, Mild Language, Use of Alcohol, and Violence.

FFXIV is T for Alcohol Reference, Animated Blood, Language (so that right there bumps it up a bit on the scale in comparison), Suggestive Themes (another one that tends to cause rating boards to bump higher), and Violence.

Add in a dismemberment of a body part where you can actually see the bone, muscle, connective tissue, etc., would probably bump up the Animated Blood to Blood and Gore (which is for the depiction of the mutilation of body parts), which could be enough to take it from T to M on top of everything else.

Assuming it wasn't a joke that got lost in translation.

Maybe I'm remembering this wrong but didn't a main story character GET HIS ARM CUT OFF?

Mind you I suppose they hid the gore.

They sure did, and it is the kind of thing that could lead to the ultimately subjective group at the ESRB to consider it to have less of an impact on the rating, since it didn't really have any blood to it or show the wound on either side (same with the character that got sliced just before - it was violent, but obscured violence, and those elements end up tying into their decision).

Which was after he bisected (is this the right word?) a Lalafell. Of course, the deed was heavily implied and not shown. If they did show it, that scene alone would push FFXIV into M territory (or MA15+ in Australia. Maybe R18+ since it was a Lalafell and they do tend to appear childlike).

i think not only this but it would also need regional changes due to some countries having blood and gore removed from some instances, i remember the german version of some games changing people into robots to prevent blood from games on the ps1, and i know some versions of games have no blood at all, and yet hold a M or 18 game rating, so i think rather then have the messy edit for every country its a lot safer to just have the tail be 'broken' if they were able to get the damage system in for ifrit in ARR's inception then mayhaps we would of had it overall.

Ohhhh, that’s right. I beg your pardon then, I misremembered the reasoning. I’ll edit my initial post!
