What was the design reason behind the Rathalos Armor Set?

I'm curious, as a person who played MH many years ago on the PSP (freedom unite 2 I think), I have some fond memories of hunt grinding Rathalos just to make that long sword and armor set. So I was stoked about the cross-over but even before it's launch when I saw the armor design for the FF14 Rathalos inspired armor set, well you could guess my disappointment. I'm not going to point out what MHW got, as that doesn't really help matters much, but are they maybe at least planning on a future update to I don't know change the armor sets appearance into that of the actual Rathalos armor?
Maybe the lead costume designer was on summer vacation and couldn't be reached to do it? I'd just like some insight into the design choice for a reskin/recolor of a existing armor set. Did Square lose a bit with Capcom or something?

As for the rewards, we considered simply reproducing the Rathalos gear from the Monster Hunter series; however, we challenged ourselves to design the gear to match how the crafters of Hydaelyn would have, if they used the same materials. We also had Fujioka supervise our design. There are also undyeable and dyeable versions of the gear.

I was really hoping for something more savage like most of the gear in monster hunter. I can see some of the rathalos inspiration but at the same time it looks similar to a lot of the other gear already in game, or at least not different enough.

I guess crafters on Hydaelyn can't be bothered to make armor that actually looks protective.

Actually, breakable parts were planned from the start but they couldn't get approval under the Teen rating. They either needed to severely tone it down or have a M rating for one piece of content.

Not a big fan of most Monster Hunter sets myself but I admit I was a little underwhelmed with their interpretation of it, especially since they had tried to get breakable parts into the game but didn't have the time to - and considering the effort the MHW team had to put in on their side - a little part of me wondered if the effort was mutual. Perhaps my ignorance about all that's involved is making me unfair though.

Heavensward No, I'd never do that. XD Just inquiring if we should pray to Hydaelyn that we get a third option in the future where we can get the actual Rathalos set, which looks so much better than what we got.

I'll be perfectly honest and say that hoping they'll revisit the set in anything other than a future crossover event is exceedingly idealistic thinking, unfortunately. I'm very sorry!


As I recall from the Liveletter, their reasoning behind the existing design was determined by how Eorzean/Hydaelyn forgers would choose to design the gear had they encountered such materials. So for all intents and purposes, they created it just as they wanted.
