I am in support of SE decision on the server merge, however, the Rift idea is a good one.

If you were on a populated server (selbina people are PISSED because we are one of the most populated and we would of been top 5) you stay put, crap servers get merged into one, or are moved into bigger servers. Then everyone is given a chance to transfer characters. - how it should have been.
Sure ok so let's design a server move method that's just fair for Selbina or one that's fair for everyone. If you were on a populated server (selbina people are PISSED because we are one of the most populated and we would of been top 5) you stay put, crap servers get merged into one, or are moved into bigger servers. seriously.
You don't even know what changes they are making in the background - new hardware? better ability to hold a larger overall population? Even maybe other changes related to the eventual upgrade to 2.0?
'crap servers' --- yeah exactly WHY no one would want to be merged with Selbina. I think SE realized this.
But we have friends on our server, we already have a crappy community for this game, they are effing over big servers in favor of tinier servers, and honestly that means they're effing over most of the population. Its the majority you have to care about, who cares if you only have ls, or 2 friends, we're not talking about you, some of us have a long friends list, and multiple ls, so maybe you should also think of that. And if no one wanted to be merged with Selbina that I wouldn't meet a new character everyday who rerolled onto my server, because they're server had no items on the MW and two ls in the whole server, that is crap all day.Sure ok so let's design a server move method that's just fair for Selbina or one that's fair for everyone.

The "smaller servers would be penalized by a merge" argument is beyond ridicolous.
In a real merge, one server is simply englobed into another. If they merged Bodhum with Lindblum (just an example) the people of Bodhum would still be playing with the people they have always played with but with the extra people of lindblum around.
I mean if it's that bad you could just ignore them, I don't see how that's a disadvantage in any way.
As far as name changing goes, that's unfortunate but it's not nearly as big of a deal.
Why do people care what happens to unsubscribed players all of a sudden? Did I miss something?
Many of us have friends or family that cannot or do not want to play at the moment for one reason or another and because of this they will most likely not end up in the same server as us.
Sounds to me it's more like we, the community, are complicating it more than SE. Their plan is fairly well laid out, but they have not given us any direction (outside of World 10 assignment), and our reaction to it in the past few hours has just been rancid.

Well tough titties to the people who aren't playing now, it's their own fault.
