The sad part is that NA and EU gave it low star ratings but the JP players gave it much better ones, so their version sits at over 4 out of 5 stars. Lets take a guess whom they will be listening to. Do the japanese players dont have any other way to chat that such an app could be received so positive?

My understanding is the JP wanted this so not surprised over that at all. Only app i know jp usually stick to is LINE. I don't think Discord is really big over in Japan.

So you can only sell 1 item or buy 1 item once per day, unless you purchase the coins.

Outside of that the app IMO is a complete waste.

But if people in Japan are going to buy thousands of moogle coins and pay an additional 5$ a month for it. I am fine with the app considering it doesnt do much and I wont be using an app that has very little features and how discord is far superior.

FB is a good if harsh example, it relies on your real name being used and other contact information, I can see people shying away from using that to contact people from an online game. I don't need that sort of thing and I've most of my in-game friends on discord, but I can see why some people who be thrilled over the chat functionality.

We have Discord for third party communication, raids and holding events.
We have better ways to spend money than open access to the market like on subscriptions and actual in-game shops.
We have better ways to manage items and storage e.g. a few minutes in game.

It's pretty clear it's a cash grab. Apart from the teleportation, that was worth having on my phone for about two minutes.

But I can see why some people wouldn't want to hop in. Is Discord as popular in Japan, also? Because that could help explain the rate disparity.

I think LINE is their big messaging plattform. My understanding Discord is pretty non existent in japan.

But you also need to share your FF14 informations to log into this app. (So is it secure or can it happen that someone just gets your ID and password from that?) Also you need a smartphone with constant internet connection to use it, thus if you use an older model you are kinda out of it because you can only chat with people that are also using the app. Have maybe one or two people without it and you still need to plan it inside the game too.

Discord might not be perfect, but you can have it on a phone and on pc thus you might get all of the people in it.

For me its just a problem that we have a WoW app that was completely for free and older and that still could connect to the game and let people chat with ingame players. So I kinda wonder how a newer app cant do that.

I legit don't care enough about the app to keep playing devil's advocate. It's really not hard to find ways to poke holes at this thing.

A consequence of them wanting to monetize it. Speculatively speaking, the app appears in the Mog Station account-type list, so it's very likely they can't make it account-wide (eg all characters given an additional retainer), nor can you register more than one app with an account, even if you have multiple devices.

The chat component would be horribly over-complicated, if permitted to login to all your characters at once, though it probably should have done that. Perhaps they didn't want to create a situation where players see other characters on the same server they're not friends with being in a merged contact list. Or maybe it would just be too bandwidth intensive to keep connected. Kinda surprised they didn't just make it so that linkshells are relayed through it. That would have, at the minimum, made it more useful than simply discord or other external chat tools.
