Or they could just make all new server names still consisting of past FF towns.I sorta see the reasoning behind that; if they keep the current names, people will simply flock to their servers again and lock it, completely ruining the whole point behind the transfer. I know, the idea to going to a town like lol Bodhum does suck, but this is needed.
Or else everyone in besaid will move to besaid, lindblum to lindblum, and those from Karnak or Istory will get screwed over once again.
I'm sure SE give us the server names with the world transfer application page on march 1.
But they have said they will not
The new Worlds shall inherit the names of the ten most popular current Worlds. Name assignments will be announced after the transfer selection period has ended.
Yeah, some of you find it easy to make light of how small the issue of server name seems, but c'mon, one of the big reasons why most of us are still here because of the love for FF nostalgia, and taking away our choice of world name messes with that.
FF9 is still my favorite game out of all the games I've played, (not the technical "best" game ever, but the game closest to my heart :P ), and it makes me happy to think that my character is partly named after a FF9 character, and that I'm on a world named after an awesome FF9 city. It gives me pride in my server and makes the game, with all it's current flaws, that much more worthwhile.
It's not worth it to sacrifice that pride and nostalgia joy for the CHANCE that the new servers will be a LITTLE bit more balanced.

Right, and that's exactly why they're not displaying the names of the servers until after it's all said on done, as Ashley pointed out. But why does it have to be like that?
If it were my decision and I chose to handle server merges as they are now (not that I would) then I would just create all new server names. Both sides win. People would still get to choose their server based on the name they like the most and the population would still be spread out fairly evenly.
The worlds are not named as to keep equality to each server.
If you name 1 server Besaid, people from Besaid are going to pour into it without a second thought thus creating the same issue we have already and making the merge pointless.
I think that it is incorrect that they will find much more 'balance' Server 1 and 2 will fill up fully and fast regardless of thier name. Japanese players will steer clear of server 4 for superstition. We can see German and French players are being directed at server 10. Groups are already claiming numbers for servers (6ysahl, 7rabia, 8esaid)
They will still be unbalanced and we lose a choice and a pleasure.
What makes you think people won't just move from one server to another that has been named by the community to be the same server? (6ysahl for example).
People are going to do what's easy.
