It's a logical answer, but it doesn't change the fact that this has, and will shatter the community on every world. Now for all I know, i'm going to lose everyone I know and be stuck on a Japanese dominant server. {No thanks.}

Although I see where they are getting at without naming the worlds, but the same effect might come from numbers. Such as, people might just fill it in sequentially. Or maybe people would go by superstition or avoid unlucky numbers. Such as people might aim for numbers like 7 or 8, and avoid numbers like 4. Or avoid world 10 because of a larger multilingual/foreign player base.
If the only purpose was to allow people to stay together, while giving an even distribution, then why not allow players to form circles and then assign those circles to a random world? As for the European players, allow them to also have a checkbox option to be placed in a world more populated for German and French players. This way their is control in assigning the circle groups to evenly distribute the players population, and still allow player to keep their contacts. Additionally, they could also avoid conflicting player/retainer names as much as possible, oppose to just being first come first served.
With the current structure, it's still a scramble to join a world that might be overpopulated soon. There would be a sudden rush on the first day to secure a place, and secure your character names on a server. Then followed by corrections if anyone happens to be left out of their social circle group.
Personally though, I only care a little bit about the world name, being able to stick together with people I already play with is more important to me. If I can get both, then great, but priority goes to social circles.

Well, so now people won't choose the coolest name but just Server N°1...
Best part is, in under a week people will stop complaining and move on, like the Goobbue mount situation.
...Yeah there were complaints about the Goobbue and constant praise over it and now you see almost neither lol.

I want to be on server xxSephirothxCloudxx!!! Screw balanced world populations!!!
Seriously, is the community going to make this an issue?? If so, I recommend Producer/Director Yoshida keep the new server names as they are announced right now. That's right. You don't get historical names, you get "World 1", "World 2", etc.
Seriously.
I honestly prefer this over picking blind, Ill be honest if they were like - its all different town names/monsters/swords whatever here they are- that would even be fine. I just don't really care for GUESS!I want to be on server xxSephirothxCloudxx!!! Screw balanced world populations!!!

"Yeah let's give them the impression they actually have a choice, that'll be fun!"
We're not even CHOOSING the server we want to play in, it's basically all a damn gamble. What if you and your friends decide on a server but one of you can't make it on time and it fills the quota? Tough luck bub.
What if two of your LSs decide on different servers and you are literally forced to cut the amount of in-game friends you have in half? Tough luck.
These are all questions they have not answered or just completely ignored which makes it all the more frustrating.
I seriously cannot believe how demented this whole system is... I mean to get this far means SOMEONE there thought it was a good idea!!!
That scares me even more.

Yes, because a character that had only been around for a day or two is the same as having players who have been together for a year or more. @.@ Seriously, most of those in my linkshell have been playing together for years, having started on XI. Next time, try an example that is at least similar in situation.p.s. Quick story...back in early days of FFXI, I made my daughter delete her lvl 13 character so we could remake her on another account and play together. She cried and cried all night. We played for 6 years. She got over it.
