There was no good way to do this. I started a thread about what would happen to our names a few weeks ago, and all-in-all I think the system SE chose for naming conventions is alright.. To be honest, it's one of the few things I do like about their current plan.I only have one thing I am unhappy with in all of this. The priority in naming conflicts grants a mule character which is never played, but is playable in the sense that it is paid for, priority over a character that someone actively plays. If I actively use a character every day I play then why do I have to change my name to accommodate a character that hasn't been used in a year? It seems to me like the methodology chosen has the virtue of being simple, but lacks any acknowledgement of the effort put forth in developing a character.
For that matter if national governments, phone companies, and postal services can keep track of hundreds of thousands of people who share the same name why isn't it possible to manage this in an MMO? I don't buy that a mail system or a communication system can't work unless everyone has a unique name because in truth they work everyday in a world with 7 billion people.
