Gelmorra was abandoned because, when the Wildwoods and Hyur living with them left to live in the Twelveswood, the Duskwight were unable to maintain the city on their own. It fell into disrepair and ruin before being completely abandoned; one such ruin is the Palace of the Dead.

Ah, that explains why elementals are in the lorebook bestiary with an illustration of a sprite I’ve only seen used in Eureka.

They tend to use races relevant to a region in Lore, much of which is already established. For example, you run into plenty of Sun Seekers in Ala Mhigo and Ul'dah and Keepers of the Moon in Gridania and Limsa. This reflects the enviroments these clans generally favour. Likewise Plainsfolk and Sea Wolves are mostly found in Limsa, their historical home, and Dunesfolk are mostly found in Ul'dah. However you will find little to no Lala's or Miqote in Ishgard or Doma with the exception of Ul'dah merchants for the most part.

Really Duskwights are the main outlier due to the fact their clan is very isolationist and the areas they most inhabit are the areas of the Shroud we haven't gone to.

I would like a settlement or outpost of them at least. If i don't meet that particular player i would have not even realize they are in fact in game. They are so irrelevant in numbers i forgot they exist.

It occurred to me yesterday that in additon to being reclusive by nature, Duskwights are the "least noticable" of the alternate clans. Hyur and Au Ra clans have differences visible at a distance; Miqo'te, Roegadyn and Lalafell all have distinct naming patterns for each clan, and visible differences close-up (unique eyes or face markings) even if they have a skin colour that could belong to either clan.

But Elezen? Both clans use the same names, and both can have the same range of human skintones - Duskwights can have other colours as well of course, but it's not guaranteed. (A lot of the NPCs seem to be a greyish-tan colour rather than true grey - perhaps it depends how much time they spend out in the sun.) They can look similar enough that there's little to tell them apart at a glance, and up close you might only be able to tell if they have optional clan-specific details such as earclasps, tattoos or particular scar placements.

As I mentioned earlier, the Redbelly Wasps seem to be Duskwights - the one 'non-attacking NPC' you talk to at one point certainly is, and the others do seem to have a greyish tinge to their skin colour. It would certainly fit with the rest of the lore. It's just never specficially pointed out, and they aren't really definitely Duskwight-looking, so people might not even think about it.

If the Elezen NPCs have last names it would be possible to tell. Wildwood and Duskwights have clan specific last names so we never see a Wildwood with a Duskwight last name and vice-versa.

Technically yes, but to recognise that you'd need to make a list of surnames from the random name generator results, then compare them to the character names, and the average player isn't going to have done that.

(Alternately you just look them up on Garland Tools and see which clan they're in.)

I actually did play around with the name generator a little while back, and realised that actually a lot of Elezen NPCs do have names from the surname lists.... although any that had profiles in the lorebook have had it considered a first name and been given a(nother) surname after it.

I can't remember whether there were any oddities with Gridanian characters from one clan having a name from the other, but Ishgardians appropriately may have names from either group.

It's easier then that. Someone complied a list of all the names in the name generator and made a list of them with most of the naming conventions: FFXIV Name Generator Full List. One of thing things the creator of the list noticed was that male Elezens have three times as many forenames as all the other races have. In addition to the list of 100 forenames male Elezen pull from, they can also pull from all the surnames Wildwood and Duskwight have. This is treated like a normal forename and they have a different surname to go with it.

So if a male Elezen has a single part name and that name is supposed to be a surname, it's probably really their forename and they have another surname that isn't specified.

At the current Moonfire Faire event, Beaudefoin (the questgiver at the start of the obstacle course) is a Duskwight. He's not at all grey-skinned, so you can only really tell because he has the tattoo.

It's nice to see them get used as 'normal' NPCs sometimes.

Also I found the early quest that involved fighting Duskwight enemies - it's the Lv10 gladiator quest, and they're mercenaries hired to kill Aldis.
