Yeah, I took a break from this game for half a year, and only came back now to do the story, but nothing else really interests me. I'll just do the story, then unsub for another 6 months.

I find it odd how so many reply stating there is lots to do, I am just choosing not to do it. This fact was stated in the vary post.... The issue with this game has always been the same.... SE is horrible at providing sound long term reward structures and character power level increase, making doing the content they produce very short lived. Its a design flaw.
When I find an mmo or video game that never gets boring then that company is the best. Side comment aside tho, no mmo has lasting content in this day and age. This isn't just a xiv problem.
Yeah no game can be played for hours on end every single day and remain consistently fun, unless it has like God Hand levels of mechanical complexity... and that game pretty much killed the company that made it.
I think this question is the principal issue during this expansion. SE is trying to design for everyone at once. It's obvious now that I think about it. They end up stretching themselves too thin and then nobody is happy.
I feel like there's more to do in Stormblood compared to Heavensward, at least.
Even so, the devs said as much that they intentionally designed the game so that people with just a couple of hours every day can easily keep up with what's relevant at the end of the day, and to go play another game on the side (or sort out IRL affairs) in the meantime. It's not meant to belittle the playerbase, it's just basic empathy for players and is actually a rather self-sustaining model to prevent the kind of burnout that causes people to unsubscribe permanently (out of a belief that the effort to catch up upon returning is so insurmountable that it's not worth continuing). The issues this game has in another MMO that expects more of your time every day to keep up would not fly over well.
Although I do mention that the devs have at least succeeded into getting me into raiding precisely because there's not much else to do otherwise.
All that said, the content cycle is pretty concerning. Eureka was an attempt to break out of it, but even that is starting to become a part of the cycle itself that I'm not sure people legitimately enjoy.

"Consider this old adage: When a Bard sings alone in a desert, and no one is around to hear him... Is he truly singing?"
Some people are happy! To enough of a degree that they play several hours every day and rarely complain at least. I'm part of a really hardcore linkshell which has many people like that who seem to be online almost all of the time, myself included, but I think I might be the only one of them who comes to these forums.
Most of the happy people are talking about the game in private discords and FB groups. There's a really strong core of loyal customers who never unsub and run all of the content from Fashion Report up to Savage and everything in between. I suspect there's enough profit off these mainstay people to leave little doubt of the game service running beyond its 10th birthday.
Chip away on achievements. Grind out tank mounts, gathering and crafting, collecting all the TT cards. Lot of people take breaks between patches. Even Yoshi-p said to take breaks between them. If you find yourself not interested in stuff just step away and play something else for a bit.

Even he knows there is an issue with this subject matter.F: It will change gear progression all together.
Y: It is the second expansion pack, and if we were to do the same thing all over again, a lot of people would get tired of it. Like I said earlier, the base design of FFXIV will not change. It’s a game made for this age, but that’s exactly why even if it were to change in the future to fit the future trends, it won’t return to the past. And even if a past trend were to become a modern trend, it still must include a “modern vibe” to it. It is not negating the past, but rather extracting the interesting elements, and inviting players who like them. That’s the product we are aiming for.
Yet here we are doing the same thing all over again, what gives?

Technically things are changing all the time. Just fringe stuff though, and then there's an unchanging core beneath. I'm not opposed to them shaking up the whole structure entirely. I like fresh stuff too. It doesn't seem like that will happen any time soon because the game is quite successful already. Enough people are happy. If there is a crisis of dwindling subs, it will change dramatically like v1 to v2. If not they have no reason to take big risks. Just more variety in side dishes as usual but the main meal stays the same.
