How dull.
Well, there's still a story behind it, and I will be disappointed if it's just "Well, people summoned primals against each other as tools of war." (And I'm still going to hold onto hope that's not the whole truth.)

It's possible the Burn was either a side effect of an ancient Ivalice conflict, or was due to primals summoned in response to Koryu's rampage in the Far East.
Food for thought... In the latest quests, we disabled an Aethereal Regulator that restricted flow of Aether to The Burn. Is it possible this was done to prevent providing enough Aether to summon primals and over time, the remaining dried up as the regulator was lost to legend? In this case... the Primals wouldn't have caused the burn... the regulator did.

The implication is that the Allagans cut off the flow of aether to the Burn to use it in order to launch things into the sky and, though I don't have one myself, I believe it was outright stated in Lore Book Vol. II. (Amon, the penultimate boss of Syrcus Tower, specifically.) The aether was cut off, and then bits of the land were excavated and launched into the sky, becoming what we know as Azys Lla.Food for thought... Yep, primals causing the Burn was just part of the lie Solus (?) sold the Garleans to help perpetuate their war machine. Primals are of course still dangerous, and if left unchecked could cause a similar phenomenon... but they aren't responsible for the Burn.

4.4 seemed to hint to me that the Allagans and not primals were responsible for it, which wouldn't surprise me at all considering what else we learn this patch.
What surprises me though is that there's still life in the Burn? Not just Shadow hunter's followers being there in the short term but the dungeon has us fighting wildlife there for 2/3 of it. It seems that even with its current condition, life still finds a way.

Just had a thought about Gaius being in the Burn. I can easily imagine him going there on purpose to see if what Solus told Garlemald about the Burn was true or not. I don't think he could easily figure out that the aether of the Burn was blocked, but there's no way he could miss the Allagan ruins there. And he's got a better idea then most of how messed up Allag could get...

Given how you can go fishing in sand dunes, the Sea of Clouds, lava flows, and aetherochemical pools and find entire ecosystems living within them, this isn't' much of a stretch.4.4 seemed to hint to me that the Allagans and not primals were responsible for it, which wouldn't surprise me at all considering what else we learn this patch.

Life Uh.. ah.. finds a way

I just had another play though of the Burn for the third time today...after repeatedly always getting Saint Mocianne's Arboretum (Hard) for my Duty Finder... and I realized that I truly like the reprised version of the Praetorium's Penitus even more now. Really do... there is a distinct sad determination to it's ambivalence.
Somehow, in a weird way, it feels like Gaius' new theme... strangely, this song fits him more than his original signature tune "Bite of the Black Wolf"

I know what you mean. "Bite of the Black Wolf" has kinda turned into the generic Garlean legatus theme. If I remember correctly, it's used when you fight Regula the first time and is also used for the Zenos fight in Doma. It doesn't help that it's really Nael van Darus' theme with the choir taken out.
"Penitus" is one of those music themes that suffers from no one ever getting to hear the entire thing of in-game. After The Burn came out, I listened to all of Penitus and realized that it's really a great piece of music, but it's over seven minutes long and you never get to hear more then the first oh... three and a half minutes of it in the Praetorium. I didn't know a choir was part of it until I heard it on YouTube. Or that parts of the Prelude and Torn From the Heavens are in it. The last two and a half minutes are some of the best parts of "Penitus" and you never get to hear those in-game.
Now that I think about it, I'd totally be open to farming the Praetorium for orcestron rolls of it...
