    Anyway, devs have be so opposed to the "subclass" idea that there have been stated plans to remove base classes from the game just to make the job system simpler.

    Also OP, please don't pull that "but more options" line, because that just creates another illusion of choice that led to the role ability system we have today.

    Probably referring to games like Bravely Default and FFV.
    The thing is that those games have horrible balance too, it's just it doesn't matter because it's a single player game so optimization is a choice rather than a requirement.

    People didnt want to level extra classes in 2.0 for abilities, I dont see this system making a return. Yoshi has appeased the crowd of 1 job play style. I thought leveling other classes for abilities was great but again many people complained.

    I am not in favor of a sub job system in FFXIV. I am biased though and hated this system in XI. It indeed does create an illusion of choice. The meta will always determine what sub job you equip.

    I feel we should only have to level the jobs we actually want to play.

    /sigh at the "illusion of choice" parrots.
    FFXIV is an example of "illusion of choice", with all the useless stats. Direct hit looks like a parody. They should just remove them, nothing will be lost, and glamour would become easier to manage.
    In FFXI, while far from being the best example, there are some actual difference between stats, and there surely is a difference between rdm/blm, /whm, /sch or /nin, for example.

    Anyway, FFXIV isn't suited to subjobs or any other tentative of a clever system.

    I'd be okay with the ability to switch out roles as long as those roles were meaningful instead of like, 4 "must haves" and a bunch of "meh"s.

    It would just create cookie cutter meta builds and give the illusion of choice, in ff 11 we didn't have reddit and simulationcraft.

    Nice idea, times have changed, people will just find the best combination and there won't be any choices but the ones everyone is using.
