About roulettes, content, helping others, rewards, etc.

So I have thinking about this for quite a while with the way new content release is staggered and a lot of content already released over the years.

As far as roulettes go, we all know they're obviously there for the reasons of helping others complete duties with rewards of gil, tomes, xp, and other stuff for completion.

Now with the constant debates of what defines meaningful content and such, how do you feel about the philosophy of helping others get further in the main story and earning rewards to help you progress on the end-game. This is whether it's through roulettes, party finder, Wonderous Tails, mount farming, etc.

It's seems as if most of the content consists earning rewards through helping others via roulettes and WT. That is why I am asking this question.

As far as my answer to this question goes, I like to help others, make a difference in the lives of others, sate my thrills of combat, and earn stuff that I can decorate myself with. But sometimes I push my own luck and start to doubt myself if I am being too much of a hero and destroying my prideful morale.

Originally, I misunderstood what you were asking, so my post has been cut short. Before I post again, lemme ask: aren't players already rewarded for this? Mendacity tomes and cracked clusters already lead to endgame gear through the roulettes, WT, etc. And with mount farming, don't you already get tomes? Or am I misunderstanding what you're asking?

    I don't understand the question.

To the best of my knowledge, roulettes are already pretty rewarding though. I try to knock out Leveling Roulette on AiN for clusters whenever I'm running low, and Trials + Normal Raids makes for a really easy, fast payday of 25000 gil for like 20 minutes of effort.

If it weren't for the rewards, I wouldn't ever touch them though.

Yes they are. The question I am asking is how do people feel about most of the only content being that they can currently do revolves around doing roulettes and helping others often. The reason why I tried to be a little general in the way I asked the question is because helping others and teamwork can be a rather touchy subject.

I have given this a fair bit of thought lately because I've been gifted with some great friends who have helped me catch up in the current raid tier and I want to give back to the community. After my weekly clears I have been going back into PF and finding o5s and o6s parties who need help clearing and helping them, sometimes with friends.

To be perfectly honest it's only making me more cynical.

I don't do amazing dps as a healer in Savage. It's hard for me to give up the reigns and let my cohealers heal. Despite that I've seen multiple dps who have been under me in dps when we've hit enrages or cleared by the skin of our teeth. To be doing less dps than a self-admitted mediocre WHM is... bad.

So overall I'm beginning to feel a bit burnt out on some of this. I think that people don't research Savage and even EX primals enough before entering into them and they have the expectation that they will be carried. As someone who is entering some of these PFs with the intent of helping inexperienced players I still feel like too much dps responsibility is being abdicated.

I don't feel rewarded overall and honestly its only making me more wary of PF. If you are pulling sub 2k on an actual dps class in EX or Savage... stop, do some research. This is not the content for you right now. I'll end my mini rant here but yeah, not for me.

Honestly unless I'm doing Mentor Roulette or helping someone who asked I very rarely play for the sake of others, sometimes I'll selectively go back to old content wheb I'm bored (Final Steps, Weeping City, Royal Menagerie, Rabanastre...) but it's only because I personally find them fun, not out of obligation or desire to help others even if I end up doing so anyway.

Oh! I misinterpreted the question too.

Basically, the only content that actually gets me engaged are EX primals and Savage fights. The rest of the content, already being far too easy even before that, is just a means to an end for better enabling me and my static. Clusters for materia, gil for... more materia.

So I guess the idea is that I'm only doing roulettes for the rewards, but that, in turn, allows me to access the content that I actually care about, and be a greater asset to my team/friends.

Thanks to everyone who replied so far. They answer the question I am asking in the thread quite nicely.

I think I get it? Prior to my break, I really only ran some roulettes for the rewards, and then I bounced into raiding. Wasn't something I often enjoyed, but it was necessary to get tomes - I had some bad experiences on a server, so I was already jaded and burnt out. Didn't really have a whole lot of fun in roulettes, and there were some times that I didn't even run a roulette for an entire lockout.

Now? I actually appreciate it. Running on a new main, I have an appreciation for the players, especially those who have completed MSQ up to 4.3, who take some time out to run roulettes. Speaking on the other side, I enjoy the system, because they get their rewards to help them with whatever they want from the roulette, and I get to progress even further through the main story. I can only speak from my own experience, though, but I enjoy it, as I currently do not have an FC, so relying on other players to help me queue into something is great.

I don't view it as helping others. I do them because they are casual content you can have fun with on any job. When there is non-roulette content like that, I do it too.

Moro inadvertantly highlighted the problem with the other content; you have to study, train, and kind of view it as work and your other players as coworkers. People always use words like carried to describe it, and tbh I can't think of anything less fun. The times i've done it have been tedious more than anything, because of that. I kind of like content you can just relax in; this isn't the game I'd choose for hardcore stuff, because you might as well just do an action game where you don't need to worry about latency, meta, and 7 others doing it with you.
