Is there a "Tanking fo the Stupid" guide

I am a WHM and getting tired of curing, I want to kill something. Is there any guides out there for a beginning tank ie. lvl 1 and up. I am thinking of going WAR. Can I do WAR to lvl 50 and then do Dark Knight? Any help or advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

Tbh if you want simple tanking I'd start with PLD to get used to dungeons first. Mash Flash, rotate your defensive cooldowns and do 1-2-3 enmity combo. It's mindless and you can focus on learning how to position mobs and such easier.

You could try starting with the Palace of the Dead, that is pretty lax to mess about and learn some of your actions. Alternatively there is the Hall of the Novice training batteries or you could try some easy FATEs. If you've already reached Ishgard then DRK is available from lvl 30.

There was a decent PLD guide written a few months back, would have to dig around on the forums to find it. I'd say PLD is a safe bet for learning the basics of tanking because PLD is pretty straight forward early on, you don't get the extra combos until post 60. WAR will have access to it's 3 combo branches before 50 so it's a bit more involved (but certainly not complicated).

I thought you could start DRK as long as you had any job 50 and access to HW but I could be wrong. Been a while. You can do what you want, but I'd advise trying to stick with one tank until you get it to 70 then start on another.

DRK is unlocked in Ishgard and you can't get there without being a minimum of lvl 50 anyway because of the MSQ forces it that way.

It looks complicated, but give it a chance. It condenses everything down really nicely.

I am not a pro-tank (yet!), but have found this to be very useful: https://i.imgur.com/BlnLLeX.png

I have stared at it lots.

Also, having started with paladin, using http://guide-source.com/ffxiv-guide/paladin-tank-guide and https://www.mooglemedia.com/paladin-guide/ as food for thought (it's end game stuff, but not too overwhelming, plus Hall of the Novice for non-harsh basics and freebie gear and, if you have them, the GC squadron for testing stuff.

Plus, if you've been healing, you'll have a general idea of what it is the tank's doing, so think on that, and what you'd ideally want to do in that position.

Hall of the Novice is really handy for learning the basics, since you actually DO it rather than just reading about it. After you get the basics down, perhaps see if some friends would run some dungeons with you to practice.

Three simple starting tips I think anyone can understand.

    Hold enemies.
    Face enemies away.
Don't stand in AOES bit don't needlessly move mobs either.

Once you grasp the sheer basics, you can dive into more advanced techs

For fun, you can watch this as an example of what NOT to do. The video is satire and not meant to be taking seriously, but it contains just about everything that random tanks do that drive people crazy.
