    Estinien's Hair...please.

Not necessarily his but like an actually good hairstyle that is long and not just for females. The new hairstyle is pretty but it's clearly geared towards female characters. SE has shown they can make cool, long hair on male characters (Estinien, Zenos) without really stupid short bangs in the front. So...yeah.
This has bothered me since like 2010 haha and we keep getting new hair. Some of it's REALLY nice but it's all super short. Or if it's long it's clearly not made with the male model in mind.

And yet they added the meatball hair I use and didn't make it thick enough to not clip

Maybe I'm just reading your post wrong, but are you possibly misremembering exactly what Estinien's hair looks like?

(Either that or I'm not as clear on the definition of 'bangs' as I thought I was. It's not a term used in Australian English, as far as I'm aware anyway. But I think it's just equivalent to what we would call a 'fringe'.)

    But anyway.

I do agree that there need to be more varieties of long hair for males - there aren't many options, particularly for not-tied-back styles, and the one really long style has that headband built into it which restricts its usefulness.

That's a great looking hairstyle I hope we do get. Reminds me of Edgar Winter.

I think they were saying that estinien has long bangs, not the weird short bangs they seem to favor (bangs = fringe)

honestly, even the girls in this game don't have many long hairstyles that look good.

Technically Estinien doesn't have a 'style'. He just doesn't cut it because he's lazy, so he got a special 'overgrown' edition of the longer hairstyles favored by Ishgardian Elezen.

Those don't typically have bangs so I'm wondering if one day he just got impatient and cut out a window in his hair. He's also got random shorter chunks all over the back. I like to pretend he has split ends

I think Zenos's hair is specially modeled so the bits that go down his front don't clip through his gigantic chestplate. Estinien's is sort of modeled like that but with less care so it does end up clipping since he has full range of motion and currently wears armor that sticks out in random directions. (See screenshot earlier in thread)

    I'm not confused, good.

But I thought that's a pretty normal fringe length for a lot of their male hairstyle designs - and shorter than on the other 'long' styles I could think of (ie. Artoirel/Pipin/Briardien's style, Emmanellain's, the longer one with the headband, the ponytail). So I wasn't sure if we're thinking of the same thing.

Haha, I can see him doing that.

For what it's worth, according to the NPC data on Garland Tools, Estinien's ARR/HW model has a shorter, swept-back style (eg. same as Jannequinard the AST guildmaster) so I figure maybe it was like that at the start of ARR, but between being on the run in ARR's dragoon storyline, questing in Dravania and getting possessed by Nidhogg, it's grown longer and he hasn't bothered to cut it again. (I also figure his being possessed, and whatever that did to him physically, is a plausible excuse for why he doesn't actually have the same face as his earlier model.)

Yes, I think so too. I also read somewhere that Zenos is not technically an NPC, program-wise, but a special model? Whereas Estinien is a standard NPC and can be equipped with different gear (and has had three different costume changes with his 'unmasked' model so far). So I think it's not so much that it's modeled with 'less care' as that it's for a different purpose, and can't be as custom-built to work with a single costume design - model it so it sits over his bulkier armour, and it'll look odd in the scenes where he isn't wearing it.

    Sure, why not?

I'm also really hoping for Hien's hairstyle to be added as an option for male characters. Along with his stubble.

I'm getting tired of many of the new hairstyles being clearly designed to be quite androgynous/feminine and then branded 'unisex'.

I know the same arguments get played out over and over here, but I really do disagree with that statement.

I think it comes down to your perception and/or taste in hairstyles versus Square Enix's character designers.

I also actually got the list of 'unisex' hairstyles from the game - I haven't been around long enough to be aware of how long they've been adding these for, but I judged it off where the male and female Midlander lists start having the same options.

    So I'm seeing....

    First row:
    • short male hairstyle

    Second row
    • two short hairstyles - Urianger's hair and a variation of it
    • the kind-of-triangular middle style that is maybe feminine but not really anything (also it looks terrible from the back.)
    • spiky anime guy style - used for M'zet Tia from the Ananta questline
    • short swept-back style

    Third row
    • Aerith's hair - obviously feminine
    • another short ragged style that's definitely not masculine but not really feminine either
    • long plait and side fringe - a winning design from the hairstyle contest for male characters, though used for characters of both genders
    • pompadour - another winner from the male hairstyle contest
    • scruffy shoulder-length hair - used for male characters (Aulus; also that blue-haired guy from early in SB and then the Saltery quest)

    Fourth row
    • neat bun - feminine
    • chin-length unisex style
    • longish with shaved sides - masculine
    • half-tied-back long hair - feminine
    • another chin-length unisex style - used for both genders: J'ohlmyn from the Ananta quests, Ugetsu from SAM job quest

    Fifth row
    • male monk from Stormblood trailer
    • male samurai from Stormblood trailer
    • spiky ponytail - seems to be another entry from the male hairstyle contest, or something very close to it
    • twin buns style - feminine
    • Asahi's hair - but yes it's rather "sci fi female"
    • and finally the hime style, which is feminine (but got used on a male character anyway)

Additionally, other unisex styles to my awareness....
    • Ponytail - unisex, used for male characters (Stephanivien from the MCH guild, Sanson from the BRD quests), can't think of any female characters
    • Samsonian Locks - looks feminine but again I've only seen it used for two male NPCs, although one was an actor playing female roles, the other being Sari from the 60-70 SMN quests
    • Rainmaker style - M'naago's hair, a more feminine version of the spiky ponytail but still might not look out of place on a male character?
    • new PvP hairstyle - unisex, used for Araragi from the Doman Enclave plotline
    • Gyr Abanian plait - from the female hairstyle contest

SO IN CONCLUSION, maybe there have been more feminine styles lately, but if anything it's balancing out (what I see as) an earlier tendency towards male hairstyles. Also it seems to me that the list of "contest hairstyles that actually got added to the game" skews very much to the male styles, while it's taken years for them to add the highly requested plait.

Edit to add: Additionally, now that we have the plait, it's not even something that's been simply given to everyone (to be used by those that want it), but something that people need to spend a whole lot of time or gil to acquire.
