When I went to school, this has been considered normal. To backup a statement so much that you do not have play "argument volleyball" back and forth just because everyone can't be bothered to read more than two lines.

But eh, the educational systems worldwide seem to have changed and fit the short attention span of the Millenials.. That watch Netflix series with 1.5x speed while playing video games during their chat on the phone...
I can't wait to be an old grouch like you and blame everything on the younger generation's shortcomings... Even back in your youth there were plenty of people who didn't have the time or inclination to read walls of text, especially if it held little of value. And wouldn't you know, being succinct and saying exactly what's needed without any fluff is the cornerstone to making an effective argument, no matter what the topic is! I'm pretty sure you were taught that back in the day when you had to walk up hill both ways in the snow with a baby strapped to your back just to get to/from school, right? Or were you too busy pulling yourself up by your bootstraps to pay attention in class?

Yay to increase, boo to it not being retroactively applied. Wistful suggestion: can replies that quote text have the quoted sections not count towards the character limit? That's often how I end up going over.
