I finally lucked out after who knows how many bags. (honestly likely over 100) It bums me out that it clips so many helms I use.

126 now. My luck sucks!

I think it's interesting that some hairstyles like this one require effort to obtain. However, I hope SE will continue adding hairstyles that we can choose from the character creation/aesthetician. The reason is mostly that we can't try on any of the special hairstyles before obtaining them, and that somehow steals a bit from the fun for me.
(Posting this comment because both the 4.3 hairstyles had to be obtained by other means, so I fear this will become the new norm).

Making hairstyles “obtainable” rather than “free” also stops you from being able to use them on retainers!
It looks horrible on males
Well, it *is* an entry from a competition to design a female hairstyle!
(A link to the complete list was posted earlier in the thread. It looks like several of the male “runner-up” entries have made it into the game already, but this is the first female one.)
This seems to be an unpopular opinion around these parts, but I miss the days when we had specific female/male hairstyles. A majority of unisex hairstyles look pretty damn similar, and then you have cases like this new hairstyle - clearly it was designed for females, but they're expanding it to males as well. Why not just release both a male AND female hairstyle at the same time? It just feels really lazy to me.Well, it *is* an entry from a competition to design a female hairstyle!
This also expands to hairstyles looking really bad on a lot of the races. Almost as if they design a hairstyle based on a single race, and then simply re-size to fit the other races, not taking into account face shape or anything else. I just wish they would just take the time to tailor hairstyles more to each race/sex.
With that said, I think the new hairstyle looks pretty nice on all races, as well as on the two guys I've seen running around with it in game.

There are two issues here, I think. This seems to be an unpopular opinion around these parts, but I miss the days when we had specific female/male hairstyles. One is whether hairstyles should be locked to characters of a certain gender - I don't think that's necessary. The model is there in the game, no extra work required, so let anyone who wants it have access to it if they think it looks good on their character.
The second issue is: having made the same hairstyles are available to everyone...
(a) if they try to make all the hairstyles unisex, there's not enough variety
(b) if they continue to make 'male' and 'female' hairstyles (but don't lock them accordingly), and people may start complaining about being given styles that aren't for their gender "instead of" all suitable ones - when actually the alternative would be getting their one style instead of two.
I went into more depth in a post the other day, but I feel like the "non-gender-locked" assortment of hairstyles balances towards male styles (particularly considering which NPCs they are used for, and Square Enix's character designs in general).
Now they've finally brought out this long-requested feminine style - and what have they done with it? Not given it to everyone for free in the default list, but put it as a prize that means those who want it may have to spend a large amount of time and/or gil to acquire it, and those who would never use it may be able to benefit from it.
Meanwhile it seems that several male designs from the same competition have already been implemented, and simply added to the character creator options.
For reference, the unlocked styles currently available in the character creator:
