I suspect that when it comes to character creation, players can (generally, there are bound to be exceptions,) be split into three major groups:
1: People who want their character to look as much like themselves as possible. They might be willing to throw in a single 'fantasy' detail like a tail or elf ears, but by and large they want themselves in the game.
2: People who want their character to look as different from themselves as possible. This includes opposite gender, and even purposely avoiding the game's 'human' stand-in race.
3: People who don't care about the above and just want whatever looks the coolest to them.
