So here we are sidestepping problems. One patch you'll get your best gear through fighting and questing and the next patch you'll get it by playing the materia slot machine. If everything only had a single slot it'd be a lot easier to balance equipment and probably a lot easier to actually make good crafted pieces (along the lines of Champion's Lance, etc, where the pieces require drops).

Multi-melding is poison because you have 0 influence on the results of obtaining a good piece of gear. People like to compare the success rates of materia melding to the drop rates from bosses. This is bullshit and I will tell you why: the drop rate of an item is 0 if you can't kill the boss. Your skill as a player actually influences your chances of successfully defeating a boss and getting a drop. Nothing you can do as a player influences the success rate of a meld - a HQ axe melding +21 parry and +21 parry is going to have the same success rate whether a god damn genius or a baby presses the "meld" button.
