So how do you guys feel about add-ons for FFXIV possibly.

So this is just a post about the possible addition of add-ons. I remember there use to be a option called widgets for possible add on. I think this was before the change in direction and developer. ^^ If this subject has been adressed already just point me into the direction of the link for info on. If not could we get a small idea of how yoshi feels about possible add-ons such as parcers dmg meters threat meters and such.

i shouldn't need 50 pieces of outside software to make a game enjoyable, its the mark of both failure and lack of interest in quality of development.

3rd party tools are inevitable in any MMO. SE has a choice of two evils: Embrace it, encourage people to develop on SE's add-on API, and listen to people bitch about "being unfair to PS3 players"; or, shun it and listen to people bitch about not being able to keep up with "cheaters".

They will ultimately have to deal with both since people are going to want apps that don't use the built-in API, but it becomes much easier to justify banning those people if an add-on API is in place. Can you imagine how badly FFXI's subscriber base would plummet if they started smoking everyone using 3rd party applications for simple things like spell recasts, party member TP, or equipment swaps? If FFXI had this add-on API in place for the usual windower plugins everyone uses, the only other 3rd party apps out there would be ones that are really asking for a ban, and people who were previously "cheaters" for not putting up with a horrible system are suddenly happy and abiding by the ToS.

If SE manages to make FFXIV's tracking of spells, buffs/debuffs, and cooldowns intuitive enough to not require third party interface enhancements, I say that we don't need them.

But this is SE, where Windower was practically required for certain things (such as, uh, windowed mode ><).

I was waiting for this thread.
We would probably have to wait until 2.0 and the new engine.

This was covered extensively in Yoshis interview tour after the 2.0 announcement.
There should be links in reins Jap > English thread.

I think it depends case to case basis of what the add-on does.

I mean, I don't want to see every player to download and install a bot add-on so they can all afk farm, or afk craft.

I don't want to see a "gear score" add on which would prevent less than ambitious players from participating or obtaining goals because they happen to be missing a piece of gear. (Ifrit bow pre-req for moogle fight anyone?)

While it most likely won't happen, I would like to see some sort of "approval system" where developers of add-ons submit their work to SE and they then allow the download from their sight for both PC and PS3 (and any future console) to make all platforms equal. But how would pro-am devs be able to test their work? Or be prevented from abusing/exploiting game systems?

I think SE will allow players to configure UI layouts and UI graphics, which I'm fine with. I'm just a little cautious of what can of worms will be opened once they give full access to the games inside.

They won't have full access to the "games insides", they'll have access to SE's API. The amount of content they have access to will be completely configurable by SE, and will most likely be limited to collecting information (i.e., position, HP/MP, party member stats, etc) and displaying them on the screen. I highly doubt the API will include anything that would allow for automation (unless they use the API to get the info, and use ToS breaking means to automate based on that info).

EDIT: Sadly, not all players are familiar with programming and immediately think "Oh no, bots will be everywhere and I won't have a chance." If SE adds an add-on system you can bet they will be heavily restricted.
