Sharlayan ruins in the Hinterlands

The Dravanian Hinterlands. Home of an awesome looking Sharlayan city, which probably looked even more awesome in its prime. I have one question about it though that's been bugging me since HW launch.

What is the city's name? What did they call it?

Did they ever tell us? I can find absolutely no info on this either in-game or from external sources. Everything I find just refers to "the Sharlayan colony" or something similar, but there's no way a city that size, big enough to be considered a city-state, didn't have an actual name.

Any thoughts on this?

irc the Sharlayan colony is indeed simply called.... Sharlayan. With the homeland being referred to as Old Sharlayan on the map.

The way it was explained back in the day (when Sharlayan was on the map of Aldenard but also referred to as an island in the north with no explanation) was that it's not unlike how there's a Portland on each side of the Oregon trail, the west named for the east, the east named for an island in Dorset, England.

Sometimes people leave a place, get where they're going, and decide, "Sure, let's call this that, too."

(Maybe that's why all the Dalmasca lore and dates are contradictory, now! There's an Old Dalmasca in the southern deserts of Othard and a New Dalmasca in the central mountains of Ilsabard! /s)

It's called Sharlayan. It's referred to as the Sharlayan Colony to distinguish it from the original Sharlayan in the northern seas, also known as the Old World. When the Stormblood Three Great Continents map art was released, they decided to call the north seas Sharlayan "Old Sharlayan" on the map for clarity.

It's a bit confusing when you're starting out, but stuff like this makes the world seem a bit more like real life, in my opinion.

The way I figured it, the original city on the island and the Dravanian colony together comprised the nation-state known as "Sharlayan", as in it didn't matter if someone was born on one side of the ocean or the other they were for all intents and purposes considered to be of Sharlayan. It was only when they needed to specifically refer to one place or the other that it was "Old Sharlayan" or the "Old World" and "The Sharlayan Colony" or simply "The Colony"


Compare to the United Kingdom and its components England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.
