    DirectX Error 11000002

Every time I play the game, it will crash after a few minutes. The crash produces green symbols to appear in the entire screen, and a minute later it returns to the desktop with a DX Error 11000002. This error started to appear two weeks ago. It has never happened before and I've been playing for several years, in the same machine that I use now.

    Computer Specs: GTX 1080 / Core i9-7900X / 32 GB RAM
    Nvidia Graphics Driver: 398.36 (latest)
OS Version: Windows 10 10.0.17134 Build 17134 (latest)

    - It only happens with FFXIV. Any other game works perfectly fine.
    - Performing a clean graphics driver install doesn't fix it. Rolling back to a previous version didn't fix it either.
    - Performing a clean Windows 10 reinstall doesn't fix it. I wiped out the partition and reinstalled from external disc to make sure with no luck.
    - It is not a hardware problem. Temperatures are good, voltages are good, and I performed several CPU and GPU stress tests to verify that my computer is working in perfect order (FurMark, Unigine, Prime95, etc., all pass).
    - I have no active overlay programs. Tested without Discord, Steam, Geforce Experience installed.
    - Windowed / Borderless / Fullscreen all present the same error.
    - Maximum / High / Standard graphics presets all present the same error.
    - The error occurs in a 4K, 1440p, and 1080p monitor.
    - The error occurs both while using the keyboard + mouse and a gamepad.
    - The error occurs both in 60 HZ and 144 HZ monitors.
    - The error occurs both while using g-sync and without it.

Hello Shiftedd, Thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums

Have you tried rolling back the latest Windows update? I would suggest trying this. If this does not work can you please submit a systems report. Simply go to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display.'

Hope to be of assistance. Thank you for playing Final Fantasy XIV! Hope to see you online.

Based on other reports of this kind:

Overlays or Video recording (eg GeForce Experience, OBS or Steam Bigpicture) running simultaneously. GeForce Experience is installed by default. Steam also runs their overlay by default on all games purchased through Steam. Likewise Discord is known to do this.

I know that these things, stand-alone tend to work fine, it's the combination of certain overlays that tends to do it.

My i7-4770 runs a GTX 1080, and has 32GB of ram, and Ive never had this problem with FFXIV on Windows 10. I have the same GPU driver and Windows version you do. For all intents the only difference is the CPU. But I don't run the Discord App, and don't run FFXIV through Steam. I use GeForce Experience only.

Based on the "green symbols" description, I'm more willing to say it's GeForce Experience that is the direct cause, but it might actually be something else. The way overlays work is that they hook themselves to the end of the displaylist render call, and typically only one overlay will ever work correctly without being aware of the other. Some overlays check for other overlays to make sure they are loaded after graphical overlays but before video capture ones.

It can't be Geforce Experience though. I tested without installing Geforce Experience, and only installing with drivers themselves with the same result. I tested in a fresh new copy of Windows 10 without any other program installed (no steam, no discord, no geforce experience) only drivers. I also tested underclocking my graphics card from its out-of-the-box frequencies, and still got the same error. I ran stress tests again, temperatures are perfectly fine and the system passes 12 hours of prime95 and FurMark without problems. Any other game I try, even ones more demanding than FFXIV and which push my GPU utilization to 100% for several hours have no issues whatsoever.

The only thing I can think of is that some piece of my hardware or Windows 10 setting is incompatible with FFXIV somehow. Since I tested with only FFXIV + drivers installed, I'm pretty sure it's not another third party program interfering. What is strange is that I've been playing in this computer for the last 6 months or so without any issues.

Thank you for the reply Shiftedd.

There are a couple more things you can try to alleviate the issue:

-Switch to DirectX 9 mode (select ‘Config’ from the launcher)
-Set compatibility mode to Windows 7 (right click on the exe file and select ‘Properties.’ Then select the ‘Compatibility’ tab and choose Windows 7)
-Make sure that any anti-virus software they have has the appropriate exceptions
-Install game on C drive if it is not already

We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!

It's certainly not a hardware problem. As I said, my hardware and OS install is the same save for the generation of CPU. I just don't use discord.

I do see in your list MSI Afterburner, this is also a video recorder that uses the Rivatuner Statistics Server. This I've had issues with in the past before (eg it conflicts with Steam.) You may want to try uninstalling this, or at least unchecking "start with windows" to see if it makes any difference.

The other thing I see in your software list are various software development tools. Normally these shouldn't interfere either if they're not running.

The only idea that comes to mind, if it works in DX9 but not DX11, is the CPU threading, given you have an i9. This is more of a longshot based on the difference between how DX9 and DX11 work, and DX11 uses multi-threaded display list calls and perhaps you've triggered a bug or something. You could also check the nVidia settings for the game to ensure that multithreaded rendering is turned on.

Yeah, I added those programs after testing the game, had to work on that PC too so I couldn't keep it bare bones for long heh. Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up trying with a different graphics card I had (GTX 980TI) and I don't have issues now, however it still strikes me as strange that FFXIV is the only game that presented issues with the previous GTX 1080 card. I also tested with DX9 and that also solved the issue, but I wouldn't consider that a solution since a GTX 1080 is a DX12 capable graphics card; the fact that the game has to be played on DX9 feels terrible. Using the GTX 980TI with the i9 processor doesn't seem to cause problems, so I'm still at a loss on what it could've been.

I guess it'll remain a mystery, but even so you could consider the case closed. Thanks for the help.
