DPS job advice for ShB (a character at higher level you don't know how to play)

Palace of the Dead, jump potions, or in my case leveling all 2.x and 3.x dps jobs to 50 one month then going so long without using them you can't remember a thing...

If you are thinking of trying a (new) dps job, and have one you don't know how to play that is sitting at level 50 or 60, in your opinion is it better to

wait until the new expansion drops then learning your way up to max level with the new changes in place?

    ~or~

go ahead and just learn some of the current rotations well enough to hit 70 and (re-)learn with everyone else when the new changes hit?

Asking for a friend (who is not a friend but of course just me)...

Thanks for helping make the FFXIV community a fun and welcoming place. If you're not sure you have (and you very likely have), make it a point to be patient or helpful the next time you log in so that you can know you've made a difference.

If you're on the Aether data center, congratulations! I might be your next exciting adventure healer in the Duty Finder. Please look forward to it.

I bought a jump potion for WAR because I already had PLD and DRK above 50 and I didn't want to grind through lower level dungeons with 2 skills, and had absolutely no idea what I was doing with all the skills that got thrown at me. Which kind of makes me wonder why new jobs are added at 50 or 60, because people are already bad when they had all that time to learn them, and now they're bad right at the start.

Anyway, I learned it by doing stuff unsynced with my partner for other stuff, since no one cared if I had my rotation perfect and I had time to figure it all out. But when ShB comes out I'll be picking up GNB, and I plan on going back through leveling dungeons to learn the skills and rotations as if they were learned normally.

But if it's a job already in the game and you're worried about the changes being made, from what I've seen none of them completely alter the jobs, so you're better off learning them normally now and then adjust when the changes come.

RDM BLM DRG MNK SAM: Their rotations will not change so much that Lv80 play will be an entirely different job. Your experiences with their current iterations will teach you transferable skills.

BRD MCH SMN: These are changing much more than the others. You will have to re learn the jobs when the expansion drops.

But personally, I don't think it matters which job you want to level. If you think you'll be playing it after the expansion launch, then there's not really a huge difference between learning an incomplete job at 50/60 and learning an incomplete job at 70. The real question is, when the expansion launches, would you rather have the jobs that you want to play already at 70, or is it okay to have them behind by 10 or 20 levels? Because the relearning experience will be about the same whether you're 50, 60, or 70. The sooner you get to 80, the sooner you can play and learn the job with its complete action set, so you might as well get them to 70 now if you have the time, no?

Yup. With the twist that 990/1000 instances (dungeons, trials, etc.) I've done have been with totally random DF pugs, so, I’d be one of those people doing rotations badly in your DF group while trying to learn. Figured the rush of launch might give me some cover. But, yeah, either way it’s do or don’t
