This is exactly why I prefer HW. This asian culture metaphor was too much of a deviation from a final fantasy feel. Give me dragons or dwarves not catfish and talking animalsI actually liked Stormblood because of the Asian (Doman) culture they have introduced in the MSQ. It's good that there's a lot of Eastern references in this expansion, and I sure hope 5.0 would have more exposure towards Doman/Othard. But I got a feeling that we could be heading into a different world (ahem* Warriors of Darkness Realm*).
It might be a shocking revelation, though FFXIV is a Japanese game. It's also not the first time that a Final Fantasy title has embraced Asian inspired elements, be it in terms of architecture or mythology. Wutai in FF7 and Bevelle in FF10 spring to mind.
...do they really have that much explicit asian content though? The series has always seemed to be a japanese take on western fantasy tropes more than anything. I'm trying to think through the games and am coming up blank. Like they will put the occasional ninja or samurai in one of the games, but the general feel is a lot more western. I think the only one that would feel a lot more Japanese is Type-0, with the whole magic school academy uniform thing; compare that to FF8's academy and there's quite a difference.
I mean, like the only asian influenced non-MMO game I can think of that really makes it a centerpiece of the story is Jade Empire, by a western dev.
