Actually it isn't. It came from Wizardry. Wiz's Ninja = half fighter, half thief.

What Final Fantasy doesn't have are lock-picking, trap-disarming, and trap planting. The Thief in Wizardry does all of this. The Thief in Ultima simply has higher starting agility/dexterity, and lower risk of being caught stealing. You also can't do this in Final Fantasy short of the combat move.

So far all intents the Thief/Rogue in Final Fantasy is simply not what it is in other games. So a straight-up "Pirate" or "Musketeer" or "Corsair" or whatever you want to consider a precursor job into Machinist is probably not in the cards.

However. Given that there are NPC's labeled as gunners in the Rogue job storyline, and the leader of the yellow jackets has one. It would be pretty hard to erase the fact that that there is supposed to be a gun-type of class.
