    A Paladin Reborn

Finally rejoining our noble order in Eorzea after being gone since 2.0. I’m currently level 53 but my Paladin questline won’t appear to get my new abilities. I should have access to Sheltron by now. I’m working my way through the main questline hoping it will get things kickstarted once I reach the new content. I’m currently at The Gift of Eternity, and have completed A Relic Reborn (Curtana). Have I missed something?

    Welcome back to Eorzea!

Unfortunately, certain changes with how classes and Jobs function have been made in the time you've been away, starting with Heavensward, you no longer automaticaly gain class abilities after level 50 simply by levelling and Job abilities only unlock by undertaking the level 50-60 Job quests (level 50-60 Job quests are thus more frequent as a result).... which require the entire ARR storyline to be completed and onto the HW story (in other words, you need to be able to access Ishgard and the new HW zones before the new Job quests become available, because the quests take you into these areas). So sadly if you don't yet have access to HW due to still being on ARR's patch scenario you won't be able to get those quests, and alas it also means you sadly won't have any new abilities to use despite gaining levels and exp beyond 50.

SE saw this was a problem and thus Stormblood returns to automatically learning abilities from level 60 to 70 (except for the final level 70 Job ability, which is gained by completing the relevant level 70 Job quest), but sadly they did not go back and retroactively change that with the 50-60 quests. So sadly you're stuck until you can get access to Ishgard and the lands beyond I'm afraid.

Don't despair though fellow knight! The ARR patch storylines are pretty easy now if you're beyond level 50 even without having new abilities, so keep at it and eventually you'll reach the Holy See and can finally gain your new skills in shieldwork and swordplay!

Also it should be mentioned that the old cross-class system has been scrapped completely and replaced with 'role abilities' that are shared between all classes/Jobs of a certain role - some class and Job abilities were also scrapped as a result or became these new 'role abilities' (GLA's Convalescence, Provoke and Rampart are an example of this). Unfortunately this also means GLA/PLD no longer has access to CNJ spells like Cure and Protect, but to compensate we have had a pretty massive attack and defense boost given so it balances it out. And it also means naturally you no longer have to go and level another class just to use it's abilities.

The Lv50 quests are designed around NOT having those abilities, so even if you are a 53, 54, what-not and you are doing Level 50 quests, you should not have any trouble at all, though I can imagine missing Clemency being annoying, but seriously, do your daily Roulettes, get your Tomestones of Poetics and then go buy all the Ironworks gear and nothing should stand in your way.

Once you get the HW, you'll start to get better gear as you go through the quests and/or dungeons. Ironworks is good until 54-ish. So you get quite a bit of time to start finding replacements, and by the time you get to The Aery, you should be more than ready for it as long as you keep up with your quests.

EDIT: Also, don't forget your trusty Chocobo. I recommend grabbing the Healer path first up until Choco Cure and then go down the DPS line. You+Chocobo=you will never die, ever, unless you do something exceedingly stupid.

Welcome my fellow PLD. I've also not long come back after a long break and since I have limited play time I'm not even at 50 yet! It's great to read threads like this and also get tips for myself. Great tip on choco to get cure then go back to DPS line. My Choco is my savior and friend especially as a tank that lacks DPS a bit through the MSQ. Good luck in your own MSQ fight and hope your get those abilities soon!
