Stormblood and the anecdotic swiming, better at 5.0 ?

    Hey everyone,

So,back at the end of heavensward,Yoshida told us that we could swim in stormblood,we got hyped like crasy.

But now after all that time in storblood, don't you think that swiming is totaly anecdotic ?
I mean in heavensward we got teh flying that we still use a lot,but the swiming ?
only in ruby see when i teleport in tamamizu.

As a harpoon fisher too,but the gameplay of the harpoon fisheris not so great that all the swiming was centered aroudn him.

So yeah that "swiming" idea was not used that much during stormblood,im even wondering if they did not add it just to make a big marketing plan (come to our game you can swim and dive, with underwater activity).

And i just hope that in the next expansion,if they add something like this (flying, diving)
that it will be at least used more that the swiming.

Yeah swimming feels more like a gimmick that was provided because its often in MMOs and not because it servers a purpose. Like going through a check list. I am fine that we dont have battle content with swimming, my main problem is more about it being kinda useless. Yes we can swim through stuff now and gives them more ways to design content but the ruby sea seems such a missed opportunity. You really only go there if you need to gather something and then it just feels a bit annoying.

There is no other fun underwater content and the sea looks so death and liveless that its not even fun (for me) to swim through it.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

Swimming was actually added on request of the playerbase and a vocal part of the community was adamant about NOT including things like underwater combat, because it's notorious for feeling sluggish.

One of the issues of swimming is that it's fundamentally another way to traverse terrain and traversing terrain is highly trivialized in this game. Since flying makes all modes of travel other than teleporting obsolete where it's available, that means swimming can only have relevance in/to areas where flying and porting isn't possible.
But dungeons are linear, so swimming is pointless, as there is no choice between modes of travel nor exploration to be had. In cities, there isn't much to traverse and teleport is widespread. And underwater swimming is just slightly upgraded flying. Main difference is the ability to dismount and interact with objects while floating, which isn't particularly deep. There's no engaging mechanics to the process itself either.

So yeah, there's not much they can do. There's no real point in adding any more travel options either. As such, I doubt they'll ever "add something like this" again, unless the community requests it.

Imho they could try to use swimming and diving in eureka since that is a zone where flying is resrtricted. Since also the scope of the zone is exploring (somewhat) making use of that would be a smart idea, but maybe they are scared about ppl using rivers as a way to not get killed? If so what's the problem anyway?
I don't expect pagos to use swimming (snow and ioce afterall) but I sure hope they remember it for the future

They should have designed underwater only maps,or restricted flying mount,or anything else, the swiming is just fade, some special underwater Fate, that reward you special token, for some special item,or have to do regular event to "clean "the water or fisher would not be able to get some fish.

I just hope on 5.0,if they add something, they do it good this time

I just finished re-playing the original Stormblood scenario, and I think they did some very cool stuff with swimming, particularly in the Lochs. Exploring that sunken city and finding tunnels was really cool. The problem with this kind of content is that it's basically only fun once. Repeatedly having to swim to get to the House of the Fierce early in the story got old fast. I'm not sure how to incorporate non-combat swimming in a way that remains compelling for very long. It's basically flying, but less convenient for getting around. Since flying's only long-term appeal is convenience, that leaves swimming feeling lacking.

Maybe they could incorporate swimming into PvP, allowing people to sneak around stealthily. Though without combat that might be pretty silly.

They should have made enemies on the floor of the sea... let us "land" on the sea bed and fight... use it just like flying... land to fight and gather seaweed (BTN) gather coral (MNR) ect... maybe introduce a explorer system that gives a reward for discovering various landmarks in each map (kinda like mixing the way the maps used to only be revealed as you explored them and the sightseeing logs)

Ooh I like this idea a lot. Even just putting a lot of sightseeing log entries underwater as an incentive to really explore would be cool.

It would entice me a lot more if they add giant sea creatures lurking in the waters. They can be in a form beautiful mystical sea beasts to terrifying looking giants. Back when I played TERA I could spent hours swimming every lake/ocean just to find them casually wading below my feet.

The most 'exciting' underwater experience I've had so far in this game is swimming with (a) shark.
    Heh.
