Telling a player they should quit? Is that ever justified?

Your question needs a context.

If the game is doing more harm than good to you (for whatever reason, stress or anxiety could be a reason) and somebody is aware of this and cares about you enough to politely suggest you might want to take a break, then it's acceptable.

In the context of somebody telling you you should stop playing because you are bad or whatever garbage the random typical flamer can spout from their mouths, then no it's not acceptable.

Can't help but feel this is a little bit too obvious to even ask, but whatever.

One thing that is a growing concern (and has been for any mmo) has been addiction. Like smoking, drinking, drugs, video games can be addictive. Now, what happens when people rely on gaming as an emotional crutch is a slippery slope down into depression . Yes this game is fun and yes it’s ok to spend lots of time on it. Where it’s not ok is when you NEED it to fill a void. Some people can’t separate this game from reality. Where that becomes an issue is when people are using a game as a way to get attention . That is risky as we all have our own reasons for being sympathetic or cruel or positive. My advice to anyone who NEEDS this game - take a break and enjoy the real world for awhile. This game will be there when you come back and you will be happier

Just general advice though...in the future if you have people you consider friends and who also considered you a friend just remember this....

People aren't as naive and gullible as you might assume they are. There are usually ways to see through deceit in just about anything so you might find yourself getting caught if you make it a habit.

I get how a constant barrage of negativity from people can really bother someone.... come to Marlboro... we are a small world... where you can still join in S rank hunts and there's still plenty of housing available... our economy is humming and our bot population is fairly low!.... I answered in full, so I am not sure what you mean. Certain things that I originally planned to do, I got talked out of it. Other things I intended to do, I still did. I'm not willing to go into the details of the whys, but fair enough with your point. I didn't start this thread with the intent of asking for help, and I'm trying to redirect the thread back to the original topic. Nobody really has anything to worry about.

Aww, thanks. I appreciate it, but I'd have to decline - server transfers are fairly expensive lol. The community itself is great - as evidenced by the many concerns expressed here in this thread. But no, I am fine. Nobody really knows me where I am at right now. I intend to keep it that way for the rest of my time in FFXIV. But thanks for the offer.

Context and intent are everything.

While the obvious answer to the question is "no", that's without context and/or intent.

If, let's say, I knew a player who was mentioning having real life problems and some of those problems included money issues, I would probably suggest to them - out of concern for their well being - to quit the game in order to save that money.

I'm sure this isn't what normally happens, but the question being presented on this forum topic was whether it was "ever" justified. To which I would say - in some circumstances, it might be.

Thank you for catching the part about 'justified'. And I would agree, too, if financials are being negatively affected by the game (i.e. addiction to the cash shop, spending money on retainers when one clearly can't afford it, RMT, etc.) Didn't think about this one when I posted my topic, either, so thanks for bringing that up.
