Article 13 EU - FFXIV forums in danger?

So today I ran into this:

    https://saveyourinternet.eu/
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvXOfq3AB8s
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2nXynItfu0

I didn't have time to look into it deeper, but if this passes doesn't that mean Square Enix will be liable for all links and non-FFXIV pictures posted on their forum? How is it going to affect the sharing of ideas and art if we can't link to websites on the FFXIV forums? The way I understood it those links at the top of my post would be forbidden, just as an example.

I'd like to hear what you think of this.

Is this not already in place? Even when clicking your link it say You are attempting to access a website outside the official ffxiv forum. Do you wish to proceed? So would that not cover themselves? also Website have similar but also state they cannot be responsible for content or advertisements on the linked website should you follow through to it.

If I'm understanding it correctly, the proposal is that linking will be taxed, so someone (Square Enix?) would have to pay money for allowing us to link here in the first place, which could mean SE has to forbid it to avoid getting taxed. SE would also be responsible for every picture uploaded here which isn't a screenshot or otherwise the property of SE.

So I actually looked at those links, and the first doesn't really explain what Article 13 is, only what it's supposedly going to do if it passes. Even then, Article 13 sounds like something so stupid that it was drafted specifically for the purpose of killing every other bill attached to it anyway, which is a common and very disgusting tactic used in US politics (though not sure about EU). Even if it passes and even if it actually does do all of what people are thinking it's going to do, actually regulating it simply isn't feasible. I see an incredible amount of lawsuits that would basically cripple this to the point of making it counterproductive anyway.

The other two links to videos appeared to be so immediately clickbaity and sketchy that I looked at the people who uploaded them and found that much of what they uploaded amounted to conspiracy alarmist alt-right trash that generate clicks off of panic and controversy. And now my YouTube recommendations are forever tainted. No thanks.

Every "copyright" oriented legislation tends to be pushed by the US to foreign countries, and in turn they propose their own DMCA-like or worse rules. Yes Copyright law needs to have the screwed tightened down a little because countries in the EU like Romania are notorious piracy hubs, but in general these rules always do more damage than good because they try to solve a tech problem with verbose legislation that nobody can parse themselves.

I already went through a nightmare and a half implementing EU GDPR junk for my sites and it's annoyingly awful and is going to kill all European "free services" in the long run as ad revenue will drop to zero. Sites that operate currently under perceived fair use, will have to cut off their EU users already under GDPR, and the copyright directive will make them unable to operate in the EU entirely.

For things like forums, expect many forums to just strip image hosting (which the lodestone allows people to do.) Trying to prevent people from linking to copyrighted content is a fools errand, and any EU-hosted forums would rather just move their data to Canada where the copyright regime hasn't become tyrannical. In fact one of the popular reasons sites operate out of Canada in the first place is not an implicit immunity from DMCA's, but that ISP's have no requirement to cut off those that a report is filed against. They can use the laws to shut them down, but they're not threatened with fines for non-compliance.

But it's the arm of the US copyright lobby that is trying to make it illegal to ever link to music, movies, tv shows, animation, even if they'd classify as fair use. Ever upload something to youtube only to have it blocked in Germany due to the sound? That's the existing per-country copyright rules mishmash operating. Germany doesn't have the same concept of copyright as the US does, and oddly enough Germany can impose copyright claims on foreigners, but will ignore all claims from foreigners.

So it's things like that why the EU is doing what they're doing.

You can delete your video history and that should solve your problem
