Other MMOs that you think ARE ACTUALLY BETTER?

Other MMOs that you think ARE ACTUALLY BETTER?

Basically, what other MMOs that you played (emphasis) do you think are actually better than FF14?

I played WoW and I think FF14 is WAY better.

I played ESO (Elder Scrolls Online) and I think they're about equal. ESO's dungeons are, in my opinion, better, but the actual mechanics of the gameplay are WEIRD... For example, there is no such thing as a strength stat. Your physical damage are dependent on two things: Total amount of stamina, and your passive skills. NO strength stat. Another weird thing about it is that it is virtually impossible to play the game optimally as a pure warrior. Magic is an essential part of the game even as a tank, which annoys the heck out of me.

This gets my vote as well. XIV benefits from being the newer game with ease of play, accessibility and graphics, but the game content itself is just so stale (IMO). How long are we going to just repeat the same cycle?

Old school Pre-CU Star Wars Galaxies right after Jump to Lightspeed came out. Miss that game a lot

Every MMO I've played has it's quirks that are in imo better or worse than others in the genre, may favorite MMO though till I came to XIV was DAoC.

I loved DAoC for many reasons such as it's customizable skill point distribution, horizontal progression, thousands upon thousands of options for building a gear set, character creator, massive scale raids (100+ people), plot based housing for up to 27k players per server, houses of any size being able to be built on any plot, and everything being open world with only a handful of encounters being instanced. One of my favorite things though, was that the devs were not afraid to devote entire patches to going back to making old content relevant and breathe new life into it, they even dedicated an entire mini-expansion to make housing and made it free to all players.

At the same time though, it lacked a glamour system, mail system, crafting was pure rng with no skills, to be competitive while solo you had to have a second account for a "buff bot", and in the end PvP was the main focus of the game, even though I was on a PvE server.

DAoC was/still is my most favorite MMO of all time. I wish it could get released again in better graphics lol I would play. The PvP in that game was also ahead of its time.

I still believe that their RvR system is currently the best way what PvP has to offer.

Ultima Online *chuckle* was better because you could interact with everything. Also Ultima Online didn't glue NPC's to the map, they operated on schedules. I've yet to see any other MMO adapt this. FFXIV's only scheduled NPC's are related to FATES.

No MMO is better than FFXIV for everything however. Mostly I wish FFXIV would have seamless worlds again, like seamless with the diving as well. The only MMO that I think does anything better than FFXIV is SWTOR's cutscene's and light/dark conversation decision trees. That however is more of a "Bioware" thing, and EA is determined to run the SW license into the ground. If I cared about SW at all I might have played it beyond the beta.

I wish we could go back to seamless zones, just no loading tunnels. I know Yoshi-P's take on this was that loading tunnels needlessly added empty(dead) space between places, let's just get people from point A to B and not force them to walk through 30 minutes of empty scenery to get there. It's not the empty scenery I want, it's that I want going from point A to point B to be it's own adventure. Other games have tried to put stuff in between cities (Eg caravans/escort missions) but nothing has really felt fun. Mabinogi had something like this, but I think they lifted it from another game.

Would have to agree XI > XIV as XIV's content is just stale to say the least and it looks like the XIV dev team is just going to continue with the safe route. I have been wondering how XI would look if remade with todays game engines.

Edit / Comment: My post assumes, based on the emphasis in the thread title, that OP is attempting to argue that FFXIV is actually a much better game than we give it credit for, and that the community as a whole bitches too much. If this wasn't the attempt, then be more careful with caps lock in the future.

I've only played two MMOs seriously: FFXI and FFXIV. FFXI is unquestionably a better game. It's more varied, more creative, more memorable, more challenging; about the only area in which FFXIV matches FFXI is the storyline, and even there, FFXI has structural advantages (its storyline components are run in parallel, so you don't have to clear all previous expansions to start the next one).

That said, FFXI is badly out-dated. Its graphics are painfully primitive, its control system is archaic. It isn't receiving new expansions, nor is it attracting new players. As a result, despite being a superior game, it's no longer a completely viable experience for me.

This gets at the core problem of your question, Super_Bee_Brian: it's not about what MMOs are actually better. There are plenty of them, with FFXI being merely one example. It's about whether or not any currently-supported, currently-active MMOs are better than FFXIV. In my estimation, there aren't any - but that's grading FFXIV on a major curve. Being the best of a shallow, vanilla-flavoured collection of games does not a bragging point make.
