I play most females as I am a female irl. However when it comes to roleplaying, I pretty much only strictly play male characters. I have a male Au Ra I use for RP purposes and on forums, my characters are always male.
I do, but it's more of a cosplay design choice + carrying over what I played as in a previous MMO, which had gender-locked classes/characters (of which there were only 3 male characters compared to the 6 female characters - and one of the male classes was the game's primary support).
That, and I'm mildly put off by how skimpy some of the female designs are.
"Consider this old adage: When a Bard sings alone in a desert, and no one is around to hear him... Is he truly singing?"
My original main in FFXIV was a male Lalafell; however, I ended up switching to my female Miqo'te alt at the start of Heavensward (My main had gone through ARR first, so I decided my alt should get to go through HW first for a different experience). I created both characters back in 1.0; the lalafell was a transposition of my Tarutaru character in FFXI, while the Miqo'te alt was due to an answer Nobuo Uematsu gave in the making-of interview DVD that had come with the game. ( https://youtu.be/JjhqU3fUUXU?t=6m59s )
As I completed HW's launch content with my Miqo'te "alt", however, I found myself sticking with that character, making more and more progress on content, eventually dipping into stuff I hadn't completed on my main, until suddenly I found myself with an "alt" with a significant amount of progress over my "main", and so they swapped.
I've tried swapping to female Lala to try to stick to my "Tarutaru roots", I've tried switching to male miqo'te to see if it was just a "cat thing", but in the end I ended up switching her back to female Miqo'te. She just seems to have become her own character. I also kinda like not having to uphold the "dudebro gamer" mentality in front of strangers in the game, and between Metroid, Tomb Raider, the recent Horizon: Zero Dawn game, Final Fantasy VI, and a few others, I find I tend to enjoy games with female leads in general.
I guess it was just an unexpected evolution in my MMO playstyle. X)
I am female and I play both genders. My main is female and has everything leveled. My male alt has all crafting leveled, six battle jobs, and I am currently working on the 7th. I also have a 2nd alt that is female. I enjoy playing male and female characters equally. I designed my male alt to look the way he does because I really like male miqo'te.

I don't, but it's just not the kind of character I want to make. I played a female on WoW for over 10 years. It really just matters what kind of fantasy I'm interested in fulfilling at the time.
I play a lala cause, I'm not a girl, not yet a woman... if anyone else gets thst recerence, we are old, lol. T.T
I like helping people with their Job ideas, it's fun to help them visuallize and create the job they'd like to play most. Plus I make my own too, I'll post them eventually.
I always play female characters in MMOs and RPGs as I've always been a huge fan of female heros in fantasy/sci-fi/anime since the late 80s.
Less screen space and more fun to gear/dress up as well. It doesn't help that I'm a fan of cute stuff and that reinforces these actions even more.
If its an anthropomorphic female character, even better but that's more an odd kink tbh (nothing to do sexual-wise, just I have more fun running around and gearing them up and enjoy the visuals more).
I've only been randomly bothered by weirdos/perverts 4 times since playing this genre since 2001. Twice in WoW, once in GW2, and once here in FFXIV.
LOL I'm definitely getting old!
I'm female IRL and ONLY EVER play female in games, I identify better with female avatars; my boyfriend got me into fortnite recently and I hated that I couldn't choose to be a female character so had to buy vbucks or whatever they were to buy a female outfit lol
My boyfriend however likes to play female characters in most of his games if he gets a choice, he thinks they look better than male characters.

I have nothing against players who play the opposite gender, but I'm annoyed by players who use that as a means to get free stuff from other players or they marry a player in game and don't reveal what gender they really are irl.
irl males playing male avatars would get attracted to the female avatar and would assume the player is female. The male character would give the irl male playing female character free gifts, money, etc, while not even knowing that the female character is actually being controlled by a irl male character.
This was a rampant thing in FFXI and it was beyond petty and deceptive. FYI, no one likes liars.
Please don't speak for everybody.
irl males playing male avatars would get attracted to the female avatar and would assume the player is female. > Why would anybody in their right mind even assume such a thing? When you create a character you can choose to it being either male or female, this has nothing to do with the gender in real life.
I'm hetero and attracted to girls. I'm a male and I also play a male character in game. I would not give gifts, money and whatnot to a female character or even feel attracted to it, we're playing a game here. I'm here to kill stuff, smack my shield into ubersized bosses, etc.
they marry a player in game and don't reveal what gender they really are irl. > Again, it's a game not RL. Or did that suddenly change overnight? Why would you want to marry somebody without knowing who they are? Voice chat, webcam videos, etc. Why would you marry somebody you absolutely know nothing about? And this is aimed at people thinking game EB means you're married IRL > You're NOT.
I've given free gifts to other people, yes .. friends both males and females, though gender doesn't matter, what matter is they are my friends and I wanted to give them something because I like them or for birthday or newyear or w/e.
A friend of mine is a male and plays a female character. It's not really his fault that people think he's a female just because he's running a catgirl character.
Word of advice, highest amount of female characters are played by males, I personally know many females that play male characters so they are left alone.
